Default Soap made for barbers- how did the barbers themselves use it?

Some soaps were developed more or less for barbers. I recently fell in love with Klarīs Kabinett after I got hold of a sample from a fellow member. Now I am waiting to get both Klarīs Klassik and 500 grams of the Kabinett.

Klarīs has been around since 1840 and although they got several shaving soaps the Kabinett was made for barbers. Itīs a pretty hard soap and it comes in two sticks (250 grams each). Made me wonder..

Does anyone have a theory of how the old fashioned barbers dealt (deal) with these pretty big sticks? Did they build up lather directly from the stick or did they use it as shaving stick on the customerīs face? OR did they cut a big slice and tossed it into a shaving mug? I thought it would be fun to have a discussion on the topic.

    Good evening :).
The Rigel is / was cut into smaller pieces and placed in a mug or "Tettauer" and there may be foamed.
"Tettauer" = A place for the soap and a place for a brush.

    Greetings

    Hallo Andreas!
So the soap was actually intended to be cut and sliced soap tossed into a mug (shaving dish)? While still chatting, any other old school german/austrian soaps that you can recommend?

I remember reading one of Marco's post as regards to the big blocks of soap. He said just cut it and put it in a container with a good lid. The rest gets bagged up and stored away from humidity and sunlight.

Great to hear from our german members. I try to follow the discussions on the German forums but I lack the language skills to follow the threads with ease. Nevermind, as far as I am concerned the Kabinett is most certainly one of the best soaps around. Terrific! For me myself I just stay away from the English soaps ( they are not performing that well these days). Well, the Kabinett sure set the standard to me.. And a few Italians as well.

Next is Haslinger of course..And the french Instituté Karité..(None tried yet but I am closing in on them).

Good morning, Henry / folks :).
All soaps you have listed are good shaving soaps.
Yes, the "Klar Kabinett" has tradition here in Germany for decades. The light rose scent is fine and the lather outstanding ...
I must bought me a brick of this - but a package of them (= 500 Gramm) lasts for-ether .

Yes, this time there are discussions about the "Klar" soaps in the forums here in Germany.

    Greetings
