I shouldn't have seen this thread. Now I have a handful of SE's on the watch list.

That is true we need to be careful that we don't end up taking any of Arley's earmarks :) I was glad i mentioned one I was watching or I would have snagged it before he could

Bound to happen at some point. I'm looking for user-grade. But I'm also careful not to bid too high on these things either, especially considering that one is bound to crop up at a good price.
My main concern is blades - I know there will be a supply of DE blades for a while, but what about SE? Is it more of a worry for the Shavepocalypse with SEs over DEs?

I wouldn't worry much about blades...and there are some great blades out there....they just had a group buy recently....if your worried....stock up....but most SE users get way longer out of a SE than us DE users get....heck I can only get 2 shaves in the R41 with any blade!

I was worried about blades as well, but I am on my 11th shave on one blade, and I purchased 300 in the group buy. I have PIF'd about 50, that still leaves me with 6.85 years worth of blades.
Dave at Razor Blades and More has the same blades for not much more than the group buy, $24.99 for a hundred, so there are plenty of them out there.
I think sometimes before the end of the Mayan Calendar in December I may buy a few hundred more just in case the Zombie Apocalypse does occur.

I can't say I'm a LOSER yet, but I am a loser. I do like my SEs, but love is a little strong.

the 1924 shovelhead is the front hinged ever-ready, right? if so, that is my favorite shave of all time.

I really do like the OCMM. The 1912 & I never reached the point of love, and the 1924 leaves me rougher than sandpaper. But I could use the OCMM every day, get a BBS, and be ok. Unless my Weber changes my mind though I think I will always be an OC lover!

Arley, good to know and since you are his brother, you have the right to call him whatever you like. Just to let you know, i tried the R41 2011, this morning, for the first time since selling it five months ago and i think i really like it. i am not sure, yet, and need to give it two or three weeks at least, but i think i get what all the talk has been about reinventing the DE (or the angle of the blade)! Also, not much irritation for the first time and can see it getting much easier to work with. Oh oh! Might take me a little longer than expected to become a LOSER! Hehe. Will get back to you in a little while about this one and the SEs.
Laughter, love and shaving!
I'm a born and bred Loser. Started my shaving life with a GEM SE razor, boar brush, and Old Spice mug. (Old Spice products were frequently found under the Christmas Tree.) Now, after a long stint as a non Loser, I'm back. It's been an ugly journey...through injectors, BIC disposables, the multi-blade cartridges (Macho III) and a brief dance with DE razors. But I back home again...with my friends GEM, EverReady and Star.
Yes, you can go home again...

DEs have their own place in the scheme of things. Everyone should hold onto one Gillette Slim Adjustable. Electrics were the popular choice, I'm sure, when I was first growing enough beard to shave every day, and remained there a long while. I couldn't use my first such successfully, and borrowed a DE from a friend's father. After declaring how pleased I was with a "manual shave", suddenly I was gifted with several family heirloom razors, and a complete Old Spice set of aftershave, brush, cologne, mug, soap, and talc.
Among the heirlooms was one that my grandmother or aunt claimed had been my mothers. It was an SE, and worked better for me with my soft fuzz than anything else (my mother declared it to have actually belonged to another of my Aunts). These days, I switch around among several types, and get excellent first pass results from a Gem Clog Pruf. However, a Schick G8 can shave very close to as closely, and with much more freedom from the deliberation that attends a shave with either a DE or an SE.
(The only drawback in my mind is the physical WEIGHT of the Schick; I think it's too light to "feel right", same as all of the various plastic multi-blade things are.)
