    Default Flask recommendations

I'm looking for some recommendations for flasks. I've seen the cheap 6 for $15 flasks on Amazon/eBay but have been unimpressed by the reviews. Something simple that won't break the bank would be perfect. Recommendations?

I have a flask that I received from my brother in-law (He said he got it from "Things Remembered" and has my initials engraved on the front 'CBJ'...$30USD), many years ago as a birthday present.

Also, I like to carry mine to bars to keep my drink tab low and to parties, outings ect... when I'm not too sure what the host has to drink.

I prefer simple. Just plain brushed metal.

Basically, I'm looking for something that won't leak or isn't composed of ultra-thin metal. I figure someone on B&B likely has expertise in this area. Surely FAD exists?

Old Grandad whiskey or Crown Royal are my suggestions for your flask. Seriously though the Things Remembered one is pretty nice. Bought an engraved one for my brother a few years back. And they are simple.

I got one a while back on a lark but never used it. It came with a warning that booze shouldn't be stored long-term in the flask as it would affect the flavour. Is that true for all flasks?

I have a Coleman flask I bought a couple years ago. It doesn't leak, and works fine. Sure makes a cold day fishing a little warmer. I usually have peppermint schnapps in it (It is a tradition in my family) Sometimes it has Maker's Mark in it.

    BTW
a little Maker's Mark in the peppermint schnapps = good
a little peppermint schnapps in the makers mark = not so good
Take note on when you should wash the flask first!

The Stanley flask is excellent. Highly recommended. I love mine.

The Stanley one does look pretty cool.

I just have an 8oz stainless steel one. The type you see on ebay by the hundreds. They work absolutely fine, as long as you get the ones without a seam. That's where leaks could occur.

Get a larger size than you think you need. In my experience, when others see you tipping a shot of something into your coffee or whatever, you will probably be poring for more than just yourself.

The round ones look nice, but they don't fit into a pocket so well.

I bought one at Ikea several years ago, and I wish I had bought a dozen because it looks like it has been discontinued. It has lasted, still looks new, and has never leaked. It is 18/8 stainless, the walls are thick, the washer never got sticky (a common complaint), and I've never dented it despite using it pretty often. It's made in China, but they got this thing right.

Here is mine (I photographed it from the bottom to show the numbers and make):

Notice it has an etched circle on the front, so if you see one in a thrift store or somewhere, that's probably it.

I Googled "18/8 flask" and Target sells one that looks like it, but you'd have to hold it in your hands to see if the quality is there.

I checked out the Stanley one, but to me it felt a little flimsy and the shape was odd for a hip flask.

Some things to remember about flasks: they are not designed to be thrown in a backpack, or left in a glove compartment: no matter how well they are made, they WILL leak in cases like that. They are designed to be carried upright, in your back pocket, or in a jacket inside pocket (Levi's jean jackets are great for this).

Also, I don't know if you can see it, but I scratched "200" on the bottom of mine to remind me that it holds 200 mL. Filling them up without overflowing can be a dicey thing, so what I do is pour out what is left in the flask into a measuring cup, then fill it to 200 mL, then pour that back into the flask (I always use my bottom-shelf bourbon for flask excursions, so there is no conflict there).

Whatever you decide on: once you get the "right" one, you will be looking for ways to use it.

P.S. I've seen some name-brand ones that were trash. They look basically like mine, but are thin and cheap. Hold one in your hand if you can.

My wife bought me the Things Remembered flask as a wedding gift and it's survived 12 years so far! The only complaint I have it's the wrapped (fake leather) version, but it's got a good heft to it, works well.

If you're just looking for something to get the job done get one on ebay, don't worry about flimsy. I got one there probably 10 years ago. 8 oz for probably $6 or something. It's metal, not particularly thick but not a piece of crap. The little piece that holds the top on is actually plastic. Still use it today. I have another one from things remembered I bought for when I needed...extra. It's nicer but holds less and ran about $30. My flask usage is almost exclusively for sneaking in stuff, so I take my ebay one every time, figuring if it gets confiscated I've gotten more than my moneys worth out of it.
