Default Jack Black Beard Lube - No brush, No lather, No hassle, but............

.......... it sure seems weird without the lather.

I've been testing lots of creams and soaps, and until today, Trumpers Sandalwood Cream had reigned supreme, with absolutely no nicks or razor burn compared to the others I'd tried. Two days ago, I was worried that maybe my Fusion cartridge was getting worn, and that was why I kept getting nicks, thus biasing my results. So I used that cartridge again with the Trumpers cream, and again it still gave me the same best result.

Today I was somewhat worried. The back of the Jack Black Beard Lube tube said "To always shave during or after a shower". Well, I don't like having a shower, then a shave and then going to bed. So instead, this morning I wet my face, wandered around for 7 or 8 minutes with a wet face, went back and wet it again, applied the Beard Lube and shaved with the same Fusion cartridge. The Lube didn't have the same ultra-slippery glide as the Trumper's cream, but the results were the same - no nicks or razor burn.

I am extremely impressed with it.
I got it at around half the price of the Trumpers tube, and the Lube tube has roughly double the quantity.

To those of you who have tried it, how do you rate it against your favourite soap or cream?

Also, what do you think of the assumption on the back of the Lube tube that everyone necessarily showers in the morning?
Don't some people like to go to bed with clean pores at night?

    Cheers,
    Renato

I shower and shave at night. But I also work nights and sleep days. :)

    Hadn't thought of that one!

When you shower makes no difference. Your only shaving your face right? So just prep you're face. Personally I really like the performance of the beard lube. I do like whipping up a lather though, so I use the beard lube when I'm short on time or when I go on vacation, so I don't have to take a brush with me.

Agreed - very good performance, and thanks, as I hadn't actually thought about it being especially suitable for vacations.

I keep wondering if a tiny bit of Beard Lube would increase the performance of poorer performing shaving stuff - like gels and foams, or the Dr. Lewinn's shave cream that gave me so many nicks last week. I can see a lot of experimentation with it.

I bought a 16 oz bottle to shave my head with and didn't care for it. Couldn't get enough lather for my tastes. Same thing for my face. I may PIF it soon. YMMV I guess!

I've heard some use it as a pre-shave. then use something else and lather over it.

    1. wet face
    2. apply beard lube
    3. let sit for few minutes
    4. either rinse and then lather or lather on top of it
I mustache you a question, since a little beard told me or do you want me to shave it?

Concerning the bear lube I must say that it has been a decent product. Nothing to write home about but it does work and is agreeable to my face. However I still get a better shave with shaving cream and thus prefer that.

I have used it as a pre shave and as a shave cream. It works great both ways.

I got zero lather. I don't think one is supposed to get any lather from it.
I think you found it somewhat disconcerting like I did.

Thanks for that. I can't really see the point of rinsing it out before putting lather over it, as it didn't leave my face particularly slippery when I washed it off. Unless of course, one can't work up much of a lather with it on. I'll experiment with it tomorrow and see how it works in combination with something else.

Fair enough. To me a "better shave" is just being able to get through it without nicks anywhere and razor burn on my throat. So I'm not really commenting on the actual quality of the shave the way others can do.
    Which is your favourite cream?

Of course this now means I'm going to have to try it as a preshave (in tinier amounts than the shave amount) with the creams/soaps that didn't work that well on me, and see whether their performance is improved or not.

Thanks, I feel sure you are right.
The other thing is, will it increase the performance of what I think is my best performer? I might even be tempted to get a straight razor if that is the case.

I feel it enhances every thing I've tried it with ( TOBS, proraso, cella, RR, ect) but that is subjective, I can't promise you my results. If you have a cream or soap that is slicker than beard lube I doubt it would help much. I haven't found anything slicker though. But I haven't been doing this very long. All I know is that when my wife brought it home I thought oh, crap! I'm gonna have to use this junk..... But I was amazed and I been using it ever since. I do like a thick sweet smelling lather so I do use my other soaps too but I usually put a lil beard lube on first.

Edit: the one thing I use that's slicker is proraso über lather soap and cream and lil glycerin

You have an eztremely thoughtful wife! She must have researched it or sought good advice from someone.

Now I almost wish I had bought the better value 16oz bottle instead of the tube.

I just bought the Proraso standard hard cream/soap in a tub, are you referring to another version, or just that one with the glycerine?
If the latter I can try your trick and compare it to Trumpers Sandalwood cream, which is definitely more slippery than the Beard Lube.

That's the one. I load my brush with the soap then put some proraso cream ( from the squeeze tube) a few drops of glycerin then lather it all together. It's great!
