Thread: Etsy Soaps

  1. Default Etsy Soaps

Has anyone tried some of the numerous shaving soaps for sale on Etsy?

I ordered some Sandalwood Lavender tonight just for the hell of it. Who knows, maybe I'll discover the next big soap craze...

I'd be interested in hearing some others' experiences regarding the sometimes questionable world of Etsy, though.

Do some searches...there are a lot of really poorly done soaps on Etsy and eBay made by people who have no clue about shaving soap. Most of the ones that are going to work at all will be from names you've already heard here or the company is using a pre-made soap base that happens to be decent.

Have tried 5 or 6 ETSY soaps in the past, a couple made good bath soap, a couple weren't even fit for that. Have also used close to a couple dozen other "crafty-type" shave soaps from craft fairs, small shops etc, about the same ratio of decent bath soap vs. land-fill fodder... NONE have been worth shaving with.

On the OTHER hand, the Artisan soaps you see mentioned here on B&B produced by the "vendors" who are members here, ARE decent, usable, products. They may or may not hit the "top" mark as your favorite soap, BUT they are tried, tested, perform well for most who use them, and aren't just something slopped together by someone who has never held a badger (or boar) brush in their hands before.

Ebay vendor evanest ( Eva Nestorova ) makes pretty darn good shaving soap. Now, I haven't tried MdC or C&S, but I have tried a handful of the top performers ( Tobs, RR, Cella, Cade, etc). I would say that eva's soaps nearly perform up there with these guys.

The lather is quite slick and easy to build. It will tolerate a decent little range of hydration, and I find it to be pretty stable.

You can get 6 pucks for $20.50 shipped and a variety of scents are available.

Speaking of scent, this is one of the strongest areas of her soaps. The scents are strong and amazing.

She ships fast, always includes a handwritten note with your order, and answers questions quickly.

I have not tried the soap with the goats milk added, but I do have a puck of it on reserve. In the meantime, I can;t speak to it.

I am not affiliated with her little soapmaking business in any way, I just feel that its silly that she flies under the radar.

The only one I've heard any semi favorable reviews for was Madam Scodioli. Even if they aren't that good, her whole shtick is pretty fun.

I forget the specific e-tailer on Etsy (wife got the soap for me) but one of their scents is named 'Mundus' which should narrow it down.
They claimed a high tallow and lanolin content which, MWF addict that I am, appealed immediately.

A better shave than with my Proraso or Art of Shaving gear - i.e. no burn, one bump, no ingrowns - but still not quite as cushiony/pillowy as MWF.

Bottom Line: If you like the feel of MWF and lanolin/tallow soaps but want a stronger musky scent, look into a puck of 'Mundus'.

The only artisan soap I bought on etsy.com was "Mundus" Bay Rum. It has been an excellent performer for me, but I have seen others for whom it was not. But for $8.00 delivered how can you go wrong.

I'm gonna have to add Mundus to my list of soaps to try. The write up and packaging are good enough for me!

I've had good luck with Red Leaf. It's a melt-and-pour base, but a good quality one. The English Coast scent is wonderful for warm weather.

I've been quite pleased with 1846housesoaps on Etsy. Particularly her Lavender, Orange, & Patchouli aka Herbal Citrus and Sandalwood Vanilla offerings.

I know this thread is older but I would like to chime in (my first post!). I've been wet shaving with a DE for about a year and a half now so I'm not a rank amateur anymore...but I am still learning with every shave.

I took the plunge and got some samples from Madame Scodioli and I was impressed enough to buy a couple pucks. They smell great and make a very nice, slick lather. I was using pre-shave oils and stopped because the lather from the Scodioli stuff is just right.

Mundus soaps are good, I get a slick lather from them. Give them a shot. They come in creams or soaps, and include tallow and lanolin.

Hierophant and Grey Skies for the pucks. The samples I got 1 of just about everything. I like all of them but Dust Shaker which to me smells too 'feminine' for my taste.

I received a 2 3-pack soap sampler packs over Christmas. They are from a vendor out in Lubbock named Dirty Deeds. Checked them out and they are on Etsy. Gave one of their soaps a shot this morning. The lather started fairly quickly. It was kind of slick and kind of stable. Chalked it up to water:soap ratio so I added more soap. Finally got to a nice proto-lather so I moved to the face lather. As soon as I applied the brush to my face I got a mild burning sensation. Needless to say, I did not continue. I will give it another go before chucking them.

Stay away from sweet olive soap works. The lather from the soap no matter how much I loaded would just disintegrate on my face after a few seconds.

Mundus is a top notch shaving soap. My favorite scents are Citrus-Sandalwood and Brave.
