Default Any Vegan Shavers out there?

I am a vegan and just started wet shaving. Just wondering if any other vegans have any advice on products or anything shaving related such as non animal soaps, creams, aftershaves and such. I use an Omega Synthetic and just ordered some Mama Bear soap samples.

Welcome. I'm not a vegan, but it sounds like you are off to a good start.

I would assume that any shaving soap or cream that doesn't contain tallow would be acceptable to a vegan. Here's a link to the B&B Wiki page that lists the soaps that DO contain tallow. http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Categ...w_Shaving_Soap. If it's not on the list, double-check the ingredients list on the product to make sure. It may be listed as Potassium or Sodium Tallowate.

I don't think any aftershaves/balms contain animal products, but again, double-check the ingredient list to make sure.

I haven't tried one yet, but MÜHLE makes a synthetic brush using a material called "Silvertip Fibre®" that's supposed to be very close in performance to natural badger hair. It's been very favorably reviewed here by several members.

I'm not a Vegan either however i highly recommend you try Kiss My Face. They can be found at Whole Foods, Vitamin Shoppe & most health foods stores. They perform very well and cost under $5 for a tube.

    Here's their website

I follow a vegan diet only, but not in terms of shaving or anything else.

There are plenty of products out there that should be suitable for you. Synthetic brushes have come a long way, and there are a ton of high-quality vegetable based soaps and creams out there. It really isn't that hard to find a soap or cream that is free of obvious things like tallow/tallowate and lanolin.

One issue you may encounter with soaps and creams is whether the stearic acid used in the soap/cream comes from vegetable or animal sources. You will have to write the manufacturers directly and some may not have enough info on hand to confirm that their soap/cream is 100% vegan. Again, if you are just looking to avoid the obvious things, that's not hard. Same thing with aftershaves and the like.

I could give a list of my favorite soaps and creams for you but it would be quite long. Maybe I'll revisit and just give a list of my top 5 in each category.

Just curious...is Lanolin considered a no-no for vegans? Lanolin is a by-product of wool, and since the sheep isn't harmed by shearing its wool (well, maybe a little embarrassed at being naked!), is that OK? Or is any animal product, whether from a living or dead critter, off limits to vegans?

A strict vegan would not use any animal product if it's use could be avoided. That means no lanolin or wool sweaters. There is some debate over whether honey is okay. Many people would consider honey to be non-vegan. Things like animal products in plastics, etc. are very murky. Some beer companies will actually specify whether they use isinglass or not. There are a whole host of things that come from animals that the average person doesn't even think about. Preservatives in foods are a big one (sometimes made from ground up bones, believe it or not), for example.

I'm almost positive I saw some creams and soaps marketed as vegan friendly but I'm far from being vegan and have never paid much attention to it.

+ I also wouldn't consider honey to be good for vegans. It's bad for the teeth.

I think this is one of those area that really just depends on the person. For my wife and I, yes, we stay away from it, which is even what D3 vit is comprised of.

But on the other hand, we do consume honey. Which will spark a huge debate.

Believe me, I am not one to talk about animal rights or spirits or whatever, like that. A plant based diet works best for me. I had a grand deal of stomach issues a few years ago and this was the best route to take and it has been successful for me and my family supports.

I want to thank everyone on the comments so far. Honestly, this is the first place I have mentioned being a vegan and have not gotten flack for it, so cheers. THanks again.

There shouldn't be any flack at all for what one chooses to do or be. In our house we follow a vegetarian diet, but are not as strict as vegan. We do eat fish and dairy. Congrats to you on your choices, and welcome.

Welcome to B&B, and Happy Shaving!

+1 on the KMF ... its good stuff, readily available, and dirt cheap. My favorite KMF products are FragranceFree and Lavender/Shea.

I can't swear to it, but I think both The Body Shop and LUSH tout their products as being produced via "No Cruelty to Animals." You'll have to decide for yourself if this meets your criteria.

Finally, Burt's Bees makes a terrific shave cream, ASB, bath soap and other grooming products. A lot of shavers are turned off by the fact the cream doesn't lather, but that doesn't stop it from giving me a terrific shave every time. And when you read the list of ingredients, its all in plain English, listing oils and extracts from various plants and flowers, rather than a long list of complex chemicals.
    I Came. I Shaved. I Conquered.

    Welcome to B&B, Wcoppage.

I applaud your choice of diet and I hope you keep us posted on your experiences with shaving products.

If you'd care to share, I'm curious to know what animal-free products you're using in the bathroom (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.).

    Thanks.

As far as products, the main soap/shampoo I use is J.R. Liggetts and Dr. Bronner's. Money of course is tight, so the more conscious I can be the better, but I wish I could always afford Tom's or Burt Bee's for Toothpaste and Deo, but I usually just buy what I can afford being an Adjunct.

Where I live is about to get a Whole Foods, which usually when I travel I have to stop by one just to look at the toiletries. One brand that I really like that Whole Foods carries is the Aubrey's Men's Stock. The aftershave works well.

I'm a raw vegan. Very strict on the diet, and I do it for health reasons. I don't forego other animal products though -- leather shoes, wool sweaters, etc. MWF is a great soap with lanolin, which I happily use. My favorite soap -- the one I most often reach for -- is Martin de Candre, which, I think, is vegan-friendly.

Not a vegan, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for cute little badgers. If you're sensitive to animal issues, you could also try a horse hair brush. The horse is not harmed and the hairs are taken from what naturally comes off during grooming.

For veggie soaps: try colonel conk, Crabtree and Evelyn, L'Occitane Cade, and another vote for KMF which is an excellent cream. Body shop products are supposed to be non-animal.

Most aftershaves won't have animal products I don't think. Witch hazel is pretty decent if you're going to be in a health food store anyway, and natural potassium alum.
