Default Canned gel poll and input

I have read the canned gel posts made over time and realize that the overwhelming preference here is for a good cream or soap and a brush, and I agree- I get my best shaves that way.

But, I am seeking some input to help some colleagues who have told me that want to try DE shaving, but not want to go whole hog (pun intended) with a brush and cream and would rather used a canned product that is readily available.

So, I have gone out and tested a few of the better consumer rated gels and want your input as to which one, or some other one, is the best of the bunch in order to make the best recommendation.

Back in my canned goo days, I always had the best luck with Aveeno. However, I don't think most canned creams/gels are going to provide the kind of protection I'd like for a DE shave. You might have better luck with a brushless cream that doesn't used propellant...or something that is an either/or kind of product like KMF or something.

Thanks, Kiss my Face is already on my recommended product list. It is available locally at Whole Foods, but I wanted to able to reccomend something they could also readily pick up at a drugstore.

Nothing wrong with a can of Barbisol. I haven't used it in a long time, but the Lanolin (tan striped) one was nice.

I thought the lanolin was in the yellow can.

Of the choices you listed, I think the Aveeno is by far the best of the bunch.

Both Aveeno and Barbasol are good choices. In a pinch I'd grab one of those.

I used Aveeno for over 10 years and loved it. Last year, they changed the design of the can. The first time I used the new stuff, the can was under such high pressure that the gel shot into my hand, deflected and shot all over my ceiling and shot 15 feet into the bedroom. I called J&J to complain and they assured me it was a one time thing.

I bought another can a year later and the same thing happened. I called again, and they acted as if nobody has every reported the problem. I went online and read lots of complaints about it. It's too bad, as I really like the stuff, but I refuse to buy any more until the acknowledge and fix the issue.

I must say, given the choice, I would give up the razor and blade before I give up the brush and soaps. Just a thought, since your colleagues are only looking to make half a change. As for readily available - you can find an Omega brush and Wilkinson soap or Proraso easily in many brick and mortar stores.

Back to the question, Proraso makes a foam, so that is a good idea. Back when I used gels, I think I had settled on a white container made by Nivea and decided that it was the best product to use - but I may not have been very discerning.

Edit: Oh this is a poll........ Oh look, the white Nivea is an option in the poll....... Click.

another vote for Kiss my Face Shave cream (cool mint).
Just to let you know, King Soopers offers KMF Cool mint in their stores now. It is NOT in the shaving section! Look for the small "Natural Products" shelf one or two lanes near the Shaving shelf. If you have trouble finding it ask a clerk where to find Kiss my face products near the pharmacy. They only seem to have one shaving thing on that shelf (KMF Cool mint big pump bottle). but they do have KMF: shampoo, soap, lotion, toothpaste, etc on that shelf plus some other natural brands. It is a very small shelf, I can't tell you how many times I walked past without looking for shaving supplies.

Real shaving co is available at rite aid. There are tube versions of king of shaves, gillette, and edge available everywhere. If you really need the pressurized can, aveeno is the creamiest and most moisturizing. I used it up until I found traditional wet shaving. The target brand knock off is a little bit cheaper.

Edit: want to add Cremo, available at many drug stores like CVS. Much better than chemical propellants that dry out your face.

I've tested 25+ shaving gels and foams and 2 stand out above the rest - the expensive Clinique Shaving Gel, which is great and the even better and cheaper Sanex Shaving Gel, which I bought 25 cans of, when it was on sale at my local supermarket for $2 a can (200 ml can)

If you can get the Sanex Gel, you will get far better shaves than with the best Gillette and Nivea shaving gels - far better. I use my Sanex Shaving Gels for when I'm in a hurry in the morning and haven't got time for a 2-3 pass DE shave with the brush & DE Razor, and when I shave my head with the Gillette Fusion 2-3 times a week.
I have started using my mild Feather DE for head shaves, but the Fusion is still far better and much faster for head shaves for me.

Sanex Shave Gel does a very fine job at protecting your skin during the shave if you spend 1-2 minutes rubbing it in - it provides better protection on my skin than I get from using my excellent smelling Castle Forbes Lime shaving cream (not kidding here - just proves smell isn't everything in shaving cream). It can't compete with my Top shaving creams for sensitive skin like Acca Kappa 1869 Pot and CF Lavender - but it's a REALLY great shaving gel, trust me on this

Thanks. Sanex is new to me. I will have to look for some to try. But, from first glance it looks like it is distributed in Europe only, not here in the States. But, I will be in northern Europe in June, so I will look for some.

Not this one, the one in the first picture, with the silver handle and the really short bristles

Though, this picture makes me mighty jealous of your Proraso Licorice toothpaste. A boar bristle toothbrush added to that cup would have made me have a new desktop background!
