I would recommend that you don't try to go against the grain until you've gotten at least several successful shaves under your belt. With the grain and across the grain should be plenty to start with while you get used to everything. The technique with a DE is very different from what you're used to with a cartridge razor. The angle that you'll hold the handle is much farther away from your face, and you don't want to use any pressure at all. You should probably check out the very helpful links in the Wet Shaving Instructions and Tutorials sticky over in the Shave Clinic and Newbie Check-in forum before you start, if you haven't already.

If you like the stubble look, you should just do one pass with the grain, especially for your first shave and since you said your skin is sensitive.

Later, when you get hooked on shaving like the rest of us, you'll likely ditch the stubble look because you'll have too much fun making your face perfectly smooth.

You could try Supermax Super Platinums, Lords stainless, Gillette Blue Platinum, Super Iridium/Polsilver if you can get them. These are all considered smooth blades and should be gentle on your skin.

I'm afraid that this is not very true from my experience. I have two 'smooth' razors' and neither of them never slipped from my hand. Grooves are there for aesthetics only. From the two on the Porter's post I like the second better. I love those shiny razors.

I personally like Derby, Astra Platinum, and Lord Platinum blades. Feathers, and numerous other blades seem to find every little imperfection on my skin, and I will end up with a little nick. Perhaps I don't get as many shaves out of these blades as opposed to lets say a Feather, but that's ok.
Don't panic. Just stay calm, and reload....

Good choice of blades. You aren't missing out on much there, the Feathers are not renowned for their longevity.

What works on one mans skin and razor might not work on another mans skin/razor. Try a few out and see what works best for you. Unfortunately it's all very subjective. The other gents here have given some great advice on blades. If its available to you try ordering a sample pack. I think that's part of the adventure of wetshaving! (figuring it all out)
