Aluminum Chlorhydrate is the compound that has everyone concerned. Alum is a completely different compound that happens to contain a common atom.
The levels of aluminum that might be absorbed through the skin from alum is nil, completely insignificant.

You don't want to eat the stuff, but on the skin it's fine.

They still function just fine as deodorants. You need to use clothing type, color, and ventilation to mitigate the sweat issues. Avoid synthetics. The only time I have trouble with excessive sweating and any BO is when wearing synthetic shirts, unless they are an open weave like Polo shirts. Synthetic shirts with a tight weave like regular button-down are stink-monsters.

Razo Rock has a nice spray natural deodorant. It's the alum block in a spray.

Gotta say that I'm thrilled with the Nancy Boy spray on deodorant. I was wondering how it would hold up in hot weather, but it's worked like a charm. It's just basically grain alcohol and essential oils. The alcohol closes up your pores without clogging them and the essential oils give you a bit of fragrance. I've used the signature and stealth and both have been great.

Not real sure why I don't have this reaction when anti-perspirant is added but I don't.

I've read on this site in a few places that some gentlemen use ALUM as deodorant. How does this work? I've also seen on other sites some use baking soda in a homemade concotion...

I figured this site is the best forum to throw it out and see what suggestions I get! Does anyone have experience with Natural Deodorants? Suggestions? Much appreciated in advance...
I had good luck with Dove Clinical Protection. My dermatologist recommended it, and it prevented irritation even after strenuous workouts. But i don't like the tacky feeling it leaves. So I tried KMF fragrance-free roll-on. Works like a charm.

I've found the Osma brand Alum deodorant to work VERY WELL...but it's $12+ for a roll on bottle. I'm not sure I'm willing to pay that much but that will depend on how long that bottle lasts. Where do you find KMF? The stores (Fresh Market, Publix) around here carry some of their other products but not deodorant.

Whole Foods (in SoCal) carries KMF, don't know if they stock the entire line, but the Osma alum is no different from any other Potassium alum. You can use the rock you use on your face on your pits and it will work the same.
No need to spend $12 for the bottle.

WalMart and Target also carry Potassium Alum roll-ons for closer to $3, but be sure to read the label because they are on the shelf right next to the Ammonium Alum blends.

I've tried most all of the Walmart/Target Potassium Alum's and for some reason they've broken me out or didn't work worth a damn. Toms, Naturally Fresh, etc...I've had a different experience with Osma. The bottle is written in French so I can't read the ingredients but I suspect it is lacking some of the "fillers" that others have?

I'd agree you could probably use the same block, but even if I had to buy an extra I'd rather not go back in forth. If I'm spending all this money on nice creams, AS balms, etc. the last thing I'm going to do is be cheap and go from face to pits back to my face. :)

Easy enough to buy a 2nd block... and it'll last for many, many months... much better than $10+ for a bottle that might last a month at best.

And I'll admit that it sounds a bit distasteful going back and forth, but seriously... I shave after my shower. I'm clean, my face is clean, and my pits are clean.
Any bacteria remaining is going to die when the rock hits it.. and that is exactly how it prevent odor. No smell? No bacteria.

For the past few weeks, I have been completely satisfied with Arm and Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant. No smell and no irritation. Aluminum free and paraben free. It uses baking soda and natural oils.

Interesting thread, lots of new options to try. I tried to go the natural route with Toms lemongrass, worked really well, but then it gave me rashes after a few days.

I want to move away from Mitchum as it stains my shirts. I've read that it is the aluminium content that causes this. If I move to an alum block am I going to have the same issue?

It did the same for me. So far I've had the best results with the Osma brand roll-on Alum (expensive) and I've been using the Speick (westcoastshaving.com) and I REALLY like that. Weird, but to me the smell improves throughout the day, similar to the reviews on the website. I've also had some luck with the Every Man Jack, cedarwood. Love the smell of it.

I used to get the stains very bad when I used Aluminum based products, but I cannot speak as to the science of why they are happening. I was also in my teens and 20's sweat a whole bunch more. Good Luck!
