    Default My first restoration

I just picked up the following from eBay UK for restoration...

I'm assuming it's a Kent, but I have no idea of its size yet. I love the Kent handle shape, but I've always been put off getting one because I'm not really a fan of over-soft lofty brushes.

So, I now have to decide what knot to put in it. I'm tempted to go for a 2-band knot of some sort, and I've been looking at the TGN knots. But then I can't help thinking it might be nice to stick to Kent tradition with a silvertip (but perhaps set at a lower loft than usual).

It depends a lot on the size, obviously, but any thoughts would be welcome.

Ah, I didn't know there was a restoration sub-forum - can someone move this thread for me please?

    It's arrived, and it's enormous!

    With a handle height of nearly 60mm and a knot of about 30mm, it looks like it's a BK12. I'm well pleased - I reckon a BK12 handle for £15 is a nice bargain

There's about 60mm of loft left on the knot, which you can see is very worn - but it must have been wonderfully luxurious when it was new.

Suggestions on what to re-knot it with will be especially welcome now that I know what I have.

I'd say talk to Bernd and order a Shavemac D01 3-band knot, or 2-band if you like scrubby.

Ah Alan so you got it i was bidding on that aswell i knew it was a big kent brush but i got side tracked bidding on on a razor and forgot to up my bid and missed out but i got 3 other brushes including a brand new trumpers super badger for a steal a few days prior so not all was lost...

As for a re-knott if you don't mind a bit of scritch how about a 30mm black badger from whipped dog price $20 is a steal for such a huge knott if you ask me and with the black badgers i've had from larry they soften quickly i know he did sell 30mm silvertips but don't think he has any left....

Sounds like we both did OK then :-)

    Interesting suggestions folks, thanks.

I had wondered about a Shavemac, but I know they're pretty expensive, and I'd expect such a large one to be pricey.

Hadn't thought about a black badger from Whipped Dog, but I'll certainly take a look.

Other possibilities I've thought about are a 28mm Super from TGN, but not sure if it might be a bit too small - I need to check the diameter of the hole when I get the old knot out.

But I've got time to think about it, as I'm on a no-spend May now (which might even allow me to save enough for a Shavemac :-)
