Thread: Lathering twice

I actually read in some old barber's manual that to soften the beard, the first thing to do is lather it and cover it with a hot towel. I guess it is the same principle here as well where the lather is first used to soften the beard and lather again to shave.

I shower shave also, and do this. Wash hair and face, lather face, wash body, lather face again and shave.

I do this nearly every morning when I shave.

I know, I've been trying to quit for some time now. Hopefully this year I'll muster up enough will power to finally ditch this monkey.

Select something as your anti-drug like chewing gum for instance, its a great technique.

I believe this is actually mentioned in the tutorial on Kyle's Prep. He lathers up, applies a hot towel for a few minutes, and lathers again. I haven't been patient enough to try his whole routine.

I lather twice when I shave without showering first. The approach I follow is:

    1) Hot towel
    2) Lather
    3) Hot towel
    4) Relather.

Essentially, the first lathering is a substitute for washing your face; it serves to remove the oil on the beard allowing water to penetrate and soften the hair shaft.

I lather up, choose my straight, strop, then re-lather. Not that different. Some soaps dry completely, most dry out quite a bit in the time it takes. Works for me.

I don't usually take a shower EVERY time I shave (sometimes they just don't come at the same time) so a lot of times I just wash my face before a shave.

I saw a member (I wish I remembered which one to give credit) talk about leaving on the lather before shaving. I started doing this, I don't do a whole lot, but I'll try and whip up lather first, then do whatever I need to do/waste a minute or two, then lather up again (or more like fix the first coat, I don't wash it off...) then shave.

I tried patches, gum.. didn't work. I'm thinking about converting to pipes this year. I might be able to gradually wean myself off.

Yes, I forgot to mention those. They are easily available now locally, their cartridges too. How close were they to the real thing?
