Thread: Blades?

  1. #1

    Default Blades?

I know that this is a topic that comes down to preference, but I am interested as to what the recommendations may be. I have an Edwin Jagger DE89.
I shave around a moustache and gotee, but my beard this not very thick otherwise. While the individual hairs are course, my beard is -by no means- thick.

I am wondering what is working for you guys?
Or at least a sort of a top 5 list...

Among my favorites in my EJ89, that can be found for cheap online, are:

    Wilkinson Sword (Germany)
    Personna Lab (USA)
    Gillette 7 O'Clock Blue (Russia)

I have 100 Iridium Supers, but I'm not even gonna bother listing them (although I love them) simply because they're difficult to find and expensive to boot.

Wilkinsons, for me, are the perfect blade so far. Smooth and forgiving. My hair is somewhat coarse, but not overly thick - much like how you explained. The hairs themselves are fat little buggers, but I don't have a massive abundance of them.

I like the ones in black plastic dispensers. I don't know if that's just a wrong picture or what, but it says they're made in Germany.

These are the ones I got (same seller, same box - they are the black plastic dispensers):

Feathers or Astras depending on the mood/weather/condition of my face.

You really have to try a sampler, or samplers. What works well for any one person may be lousy for you. I've been DE shaving for just five months, but the basic principle I've learned both from B&B advice and from my own learning is that you've got to experiment--which is really fun!--and find out what works for YOU. There's no substitute.

    For the money:
    #1: Astra SP's.
    #2: Wilkinson Swords.
    #3: Gillette Blacks or Blues.

Of all the advice I have given or gotten since I started B&B and wet shaving, the oft repeated quote above is the most useful. I can give you my favorite blades for my beard type (thick, but not too coarse) but it matters little as it works only for me. The sampler packs are great. I got several and kept a daily diary for weeks. Really helped to see how my technique improved and which blades worked well for me. Do the same and you will be rewarded with a magic combo that works for you.

    1. Personna Med Prep
    2. Kai
    3. Feather plat
    4. Feather stainless
    5. Wilk Sword and Personna Red Pack (tie)

To complicate matters, the Edwin Jaggar pre-shave can move #5 to #3, and a good cream/brush combo makes #1 and #2 virtually the same.

Best of luck as you experiment. Keep a log and tell us all about it.

    Super Dave

Thanks for all of the tips. I do want a sampler pack, but with all of them I have seen you get mostly lesser blade packs to get 1 or 2 quality brands.

Does anyone have a link to a sampler that has the choicest blades?

Also, allow me 1 terrible question. Is it possible to place the blade in upside down or backwards? IE- Is there a right way to put it in?

This looks like a good selection pack http://connaughtshaving.com/popular.html Various Personnas, Astra, Lord, Gillette, Wilkinson, Feather and Shark! It's a UK company but their shipping rates are reasonable.

They're closed for a week at the moment though.

You can make your own sampler pack by buying one or two packs of blades that you want to try. For example, I ordered from WCS one pack of the following blades which I gave as a gift to a friend who returned to DE shaving a while back: Astra, Cyrstal, Feather, Gillette Yellows, Lords SS and Platinum, and Personna Reds.

bullgoose has a couple pretty good sample packs, the touchstone or elite 8 pack look like they cover the most often recommended blades.

Feathers!!!!!! Not only is it the best blade IMO but it will also help improve your technique greatly! You might actually get less nicks with it than other blades since you'll be careful.
