Noob checking in

Hey everybody I recently have discovered that shaving can possibly be fun. I used to absolutely despise shaving because of the razor burn, irritation and such that it caused. Now it's actually kind of fun. I researched and researched changing my prep work and getting away from the canned crap. I now use Jack Black's supreme shaving cream, a night and day difference, with a art of shaving brush but I am still using Mach 3 razor. So the main reason I am posting is to not only check in but also get some advice with a new razor and brush. The razor burn and irritation is almost all gone just some left on the base of my hairline that seems to last quite a few days. I am open to vintage or new and from what I have read if I go new Merkur or EJ bit vintage would be Gillette or Schick.

So that's me and I am super excited about having a easier problem free shave. I have gone from shaving once every 7-10 days to every 3-5 days.

Great to have you. Yes, it can be a very addictive hobby if you let it, but one you will always enjoy. If I could do it all over again, I would start with a vintage Gillette ball-end Tech and a sampler pack of blades. There are a few different types of Gillette Tech's, but the one with a small ball at one end is my favorite. They are very mild and easy to use, and best of all they are cheap! I think I paid $7 shipped for mine, well worth the money. Enjoy your shave!

You already have an acceptable brush and shave cream that you enjoy so your next purchase should be a nice razor to get away from the mach 3.

I always recommend an Edward Jagger DE89 to new DE shavers. It is a quality product in fit and finish and it is a milder razor that is nice to start with. It is also one you will not "out grow" as you progress. I still use one in my regular razor rotation and I have been shaving for 45 years. Muhle also makes a similar razor with the same head called the R89. Both are very well made and have exceptionally nice plating so it would be a toss the coin choice. Jagger if you want a name everyone knows or Muhle if you want a high quality product from a lesser known company. Both are win win choices

I would also recommend you get a 100 count carton of Astra Special Platinum blades. These are very good, consistent blades and will give you a very decent shave with very little effort. You can also pick up 100 of them on amazon.com for under $10

Welcome. I always got irritation with multi blade carts-even using a brush and quality soap. Switching to a DE finally solved that problem. Of the razors you mentioned I prefer the EJ to the Merkur (I have both). I have no experience with the Techs.

A Merkur Heavy Duty 34C or a Edwin Jagger 89 are good starts.

The Gilette 3-Piece Techs or Superspeeds are also mild shavers.

For a Second Razor look to the Merkur Slant.

And then there are the Open Comb Razors.

I think I am going to pull the trigger on the Muhle 89R. Seems to have the same head as the EJ but saves me $10 which lets me buy some new shaving cream! Thanks everybody for welcomes and recommendations! Picked up a sampler pack of blades too! Can't wait until they are delivered!

Also as a side note while out in my adventures today I stopped by an antique shop just to see if they had a cheap razor to play with. Well turns I out I found a little cheap Gillette gold razor. They called it a gem. So only being a few bucks I picked it up along with some cheap Walgreens blades and 90% Ido alcohol. Long story short I soaked it for a few hours and cleaned it and tested it out. And awesome. Did just as good as my Mach 3 if not better. Very impressed and can't wait for the new one to arrive. Pics will come later.
