I don't think the stone you speak of exists. I think the term was coined my SHam and he has since said that he was wrong I calling it that.

the stone on the right like the one sold here i think it is blue or purple like as i see.
but the one i saw is exact brown and i thought it is rusty or totally manganese but
it was used by the barbers maybe 50-60 years ago.
unluckily i don't have photo of it.
It is like natural combo stone. it has some minor cracks at the corners.
it is not transparent.
i searched it on internet but can not find anything.

They are French La Lune stones. I recently picked up a small 5" x 1" labeled one on eBay France, but haven't had a chance to really test it out yet. Sham regards them as better than Eschers and he knows his hones.

Looks like a BBW to me.
Matt
Bbw was produces before 1997. It was used to back old coticules for a hundred years.

It's BBW
As others have said, the "brown escher" is actually a french stone
-Nick
Thats BBW it was on the back of every coticule naturally or glued until Ardennes started using slate instead to save money.about a decade ago or so. It had a french name instead oif just Belgian Blue Whetstone but the rock is natural and coticules are natural yellow veins that run in the blue schist and are separated and cut into hones.

Your welcome. The stone also feels slicker than coticule and the blade usually slides across it easier with just water and with a slurry the BBW is capable of quite keen edges that are shave worthy in most cases even though it is said to have a lower abrasive quality. It is really just a slower stone but does not experience slurry dulling like its counterpart the coticule. A lot of times people find it easier to get a keener edge on the blue and the swicth to the yellow for finishing. Good luck with your stone. Scott

you cant really put a grit rating on natural stones..the catch is..you gotta figure out the grit rating on the slurry..thats where the metal removal happens..though you can figure out the hardness lvl4 or lvl5 for example
