Thread: Over Honing

  1. #1

    Question Over Honing

Can someone explain the whole “over honing” concept to me. When you are done lol, what are the tell tale signs that you have over honed? Moreover, can you over hone a 1K bevel set?

    Thanks gents.

    I think it's a myth...

I mean, you can spend too much time on a stone and start to get slack and lacking in your stroke as well as careless....

I can't say I've ever "over honed" a razor. The concept makes little sense to me, at least when you hone edge first.

Possibly you could over hone, and create a wire edge, with pastes, since then you are going spine first.. But I cant say I've ever done it.

Unless it means you take too long to develop the edge, and cause excessive wear to the spine.

It's an excuse so when things don't right you can say it's overhoned.

It's when you spend a lot of time honing, fail to get HHT, have a lousy shave and say, "That's it! I'm so over honing!"

The whole concept/word is created by one or perhaps a few guys with a sad, powerful influence over the whole "scene"

Even more sad is that it shows a scaring lack of basic knowledge about steel & how it behaves when put against abrasives.
If you want to be a "Meister" at something, perhaps you should at least have the basic concepts behind what you try & Master clear...

So in short; it does not exist, hence it cannot be explained

Other than that, yeah it's part of the over mystification of the honing process so that the masses will be fearful of honing their own razors and instead keep forking over $20 to their razor pimps.

overhoning is a crock of chit....

it has been explained very well in this thread but it boils down to someone got bored and dorked up a edge.....

it doesn't exist... it is a myth... just like the "honest politician".... it never has existed...
a nice walk in the woods helps me relax and relieves tension....

the fact i'm dragging a shovel and a body should be irrelevant...

Well, I don't know what overhoning is, but most people are referring to it when using excessive lap counts and/or higher pressure on high grit stones. I don't know what happens, but the edge will pass HHT easily, excels at all sharpness tests, and looks fine under the scope. If you try to shave with it, than the razor will be harsh on your skin. If you look at it under the scope again, than you can see "shadows" at parts of the edge, it seems like it has been bent to one side. I don't know what this is, but I call this overhoning, maybe it means something else to others.
