I normally use pre-shave oil when prepping, but there are a few soaps/creams that are slick enough to skip the oil...EJ Sea Buckthorn (prepared thick without much water), MWF, Tabac, and DR Harris Arlington/Marlborough.

There have been some threads in the past about which soaps are slickest. You might want to search the archives for them. As I recall, everybody likes their own soap the best, but Cella and Williams actually had a lot of supporters.

The slickest cream I have used is Kiss My Face. It doesn't require a brush, but the brush really brings out the lather.

For those who have suggested glycerin, I think I will try it too. Sounds like a winner.

I just hate to revert back to the Hydro 3 simply for slickness of lather, especially when I know that DE is the ultimate way to go (not to mention much cooler and manly!).
Just a quick hint for you ... you can get generic glycerin at Walmart very cheaply. Generic witch hazel too if you use WH. I've even bought aloe there and mixed it with the WH and a little glycerin to make my own after shave balm.

You could go the artificial route of newer cosmetics - creamo cream or that king of shaves thingy with the slick wacky beads in it. Not for me.

Acca Kappa 1869 cream in tub.

    Mike's Natural Shaving soaps.

Both = slicker than deer guts on a door knob.

Try some new razor and blade combos also.

As creams go, Musgo Real delivered the slickest lather for me. If you prefer slickness over cushion, soaps may be the way to go.

I just posted elsewhere about two products that I recently tried (after about 20 other creams and soaps). Don't know why I waited this long, except of course for having more product than I can use. Anyway I thought the Tabac soap I used was very slick and provided incrediby cushion. Far better than most other products I've tried. So I can recommend that. However, I recently tried what for me has turned out to be the slickest product I've ever used - Musgo Real cream. This stuff is just plain slippery. Another nice thing about it is that with the lanolin in it it also leaves your face feeling great afterwards. If slick is what you're looking for, Musgo might be worth trying to find.

As a bit of a disclaimer I got the Musgo in a trade from someone whose face did like the lanolin.

That's how I get my best lathers, too. I work my brush like I'm scrambling an egg w/ a fork, not making whipped cream w/ a whisk.

I'm in favor of trying the additional glycerin or using a pre-shave oil. I often use "Shave Secret" which is dirt cheap at Wally World.

After spending a few hours browsing the forum and reading reviews, I decided to order some of Mike's Natural Soaps. Ordered a tin of the peppermint and rosemary scented shaving soap. This will be my first experience with shaving soap. Looking forward to it.

I believe you'll be pleased with the results. Check youtube for soap lathering tutorials, they'll shorten your learning curve.

    Mantic59 is highly recomended.

    get your face hot toweled
pre shave oil or just olive oil then cream on top of that no brush needed
rinse the razor a lot with hot water right before every few strokes to keep that blade hot

+1 on adding more water to the mix, but for me, creams are just not as slick as a good tallow soap. Since you're face lathering, I'd try a stick. Arko, Tabac and many others are available. I'd go that route if you can't get it worked out with more water. Glycerin will probably help as well, but it's a bit of crutch. You can certainly find products that are plenty slick without adding glycerin.

Pardon if this has already been mentioned but use distilled water for making lather. It can make a huge difference depending on how hard your tap water is.
