Default Made Rite 100 reknot: pix and some questions.

Bought a Made Rite 100 bristle brush and used it a couple of times, but it was pretty worn out. Here is how it looked:

Cut the bristles down as low as I could:

Taped it up, wrapped a shop towel around it, and put it in a drill press vise:

Drilled a bunch of holes in the remaining knot:

    So here are my questions:

    - any recommendation on what I should put in there? I want to keep it small and on the scritchy side. The hole is 20mm, and the handle is 48mm tall.

    - vendor recommendations?

    - there is a seam on either side of the handle, what is the best way to buff that out?

    - it's hollow and on the light side. I'd like it a little heavier...suggestions? I was thinking pellets covered with hot glue or silicone.

    - there is no existing platform to rest the knot on: is it necessary, or recommended?

    Thanks and kindest regards,

    Vickers

P.S. Man, it sure stinks when you are drilling the old knot out.

I have not used one but people say the black badger knots from TheGoldenNib.com are pretty scritchy and Larry @ Whipped Dog also has black badger knots too. As for the seam you can get a 4 sided finger nail buffing file and that will take care of it nicely. You can get some BB's or washers to use for added weight. I havent used hot glue but I think there are people in here that have used it with success. I wouldn't use silicone because if you fill the whole bottom of the handle a skin could form on the silicone and never let the stuff below fully cure. I would get you some BB's or washers and some 5 minute epoxy and add a little epoxy to the bottom of handle then add a little filler then more epoxy then filler and so on till you get the weight you want. Then you can use a wine cork or just fill the handle the rest of the way up with epoxy to make your shelf. I would leave a few mm's shy of what you want your loft to be to allow for the epoxy whn you set your knot.

1 - pure or black badger would be a scratchy style badger. I myself would replace it with boar.
    2 - The Golden Nib
3 - Sandpaper (start with 400 grit and then work your way up through 1500-2000 grit) then buff with a plastic polish like flitz
4 - pellets covered with hot glue or 2 part epoxy would work perfectly to add weight
5 - In order to set loft height you will need some sort of shelf. I have made this shelf using a wine cork or stacked nickles that are epoxied into the brush.

    Hope this helps.
