Default Any Audiobook Listeners? Share Some Great Listens!

Because my eyesight is so bad now, I find it hard to read print books. In recent years I've discovered what a joy audiobooks can be, and I've been able to enjoy great stories again!

I'm an avid Audible member, getting two credits a month for audiobooks. If you've never checked out Audible before and are an audiobook fan, it's a must!

Sometimes I get stumped on books to choose. I tend to be kinda picky honestly. So I'm hoping this thread can help myself and others find great audiobooks, or even print books too, to listen to or read!

So please, share you're favorite listens, new or old, any genre! I'll share one to start. I recently blitzed through The Hunger Games trilogy in audio, and it was really good. Good story in all three books, and very good narration. I highly recommend!

Well, I personally love Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, so I've bought every DW audio book read by his best audiobook reader, Stephen Briggs, who is absolutely marvelous at making the characters come alive.

Roy Dotrice's narration of the Song of Ice and Fire series is truly masterful. Haven't listened to the latest book in the series (or his re-recorded Book 4) but the first 3 books in the series are among the best audiobooks ever.

Audib;e's new edition of Solaris by Stanislaw Lem is great too.

I've been looking at taking on Game of Thrones, but its so huge! but I broke down and watched the show recently so I may just have to do it!

I wanted to add a couple other good ones I've listened to lately:

Enders Game 20th Anniversary Edition - The narrator was a little melodramatic and kinda had "sticky mouth" but it was a good book
Size Matters Not - This is the autobiography of Warrick Davis, and I loved it all around.
Any Unabridged Star Wars Novels - These are great with amazing narration as well as music and sound effects, like experienceing a movie without visuals!

I enjoy biographies when read by the author. "bossypants" by Tina Fey was fantastic. I laughed all the way through.

"lucky man" by Michael j fox was great too.

I too prefer books read by the authors when possible. Jack Welch's Straight from the Gut is great to listen to when he reads it. That Boston accent is just so raw. Any of Christopher Hitchen's books if he's doing the reading are fantastic though you may not like his content. You also can't go wrong with anything read by Stephen Fry.

Above all of those, however, is the collection of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series read by Patrick Tull. I don't know how but Pat Tull slips from one accent to another so effortlessly that one forgets it's a single person reading the book. I can't do justice to the enormity of his accomplishment making this series (my favorite collection of all time) come alive.

Those aside, I'm largely disappointed in many of my recent listens. Been enjoying Stephen Pinker's "THe Better Angels of Our Nature" because of the content, but the reading is so dry and monotone that it can put one to sleep.

I'm glad to see alot more adding to this! I think audiobooks are a great thing, and its awesome to have others to help recommend some good listens!

I'm getting close to finishing Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I was very skeptical at first but the concept was somewhat intrigueing. I decided to give it a shot and have been pleasantly surprised. While not a deep book, it is written rather well and does a good job of making one feel as though they are reading/listening to real history.

I enjoyed Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter as well. It has a historical feel to it. Last night I watched it on the big screen and enjoyed it for what it is, a non stop action flick with lots of blood.

I really agree with Harry Potter, but I think Stephen Fry does them better than Jim Dale!

Stephen Fry is a great narrator! If anyone hasn't heard him do Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, you must! He makes that whole book hilarious! As far as Harry Potter, there were parts of his characterizations I didn't like. For example he read Voldemort with a high screechy voice which was hard for me to listen too. Jim Dale is a little more childish in some ways though.

I need to get that! The Hitchikers guide is great and with Fry it must be even better!

I would have probably laughed at the idea of the movie before experiencing the book. Now I really wanna see it!
