Hi is Proraso as good as some ppl say it is or is it just good marketing?

I think it's awesome. I use the green pre-shave and white shave soap. Proraso comes highly recommended and for good reason.

I had never even heard of it until I began wetshaving. In my mind, it's a must have.
Put it this way, I will always have a tub in my vanity. It's my benchmark. While others may pass it in some, even all areas, it's what I go "home" to.

Proraso is fantastic and while YMMV, many on here agree that it is a great performer. I really enjoy the scent too.

+1, can't agree more! Its affordable, lathers easily, and if you are using the green-tub version, has a wonderful cooling effect for those hot weather days! Plus, when you're finished, you have a nifty green plastic tub to use for other things....like a soap puck...

    BillyBobs,

I don't have any proraso soap, but I love the cream. I'd be happy to PIF you a few uses worth if you'd like to see what all of the well-earned hype is about.
If interested, let me know your details in a PM.

It's the first traditional shave cream I ever purchased. I could not stop sniffing it 2-3 times a day. Fantastic stuff.

Agreed! Can't count the number of times the wife has caught me sniffing that green tube.
I may or may not have even rubbed some into my wrist from time to time in hopes of catching whiffs of it later in the day.

Unless you simply don't like menthol, I'd say it's one of the few absolute "must-haves" in all of Shavedom.

Will you like the scent, or the intense cooling effect? I have no way of knowing (I like it a lot). Are there better performers? Probably (though I think it is a fantastic performer). Do you want to be transported to a barbershop in Florence, circa 1950, and to know what it might have felt like to get a shave by an experienced Italian barber? Get some Proraso. It's a classic for a reason.

Just good marketing. In fact, it's so good that it even has a lot of folks convinced that it is a good product. However, it's one of those soaps that you just have to try so you know what everyone is talking about, just don't drink the Kool-Aid. You don't have to like it just because all the cool kids do.

I am looking forward to trying the newly reformulated Proraso, though. I hear it is a big improvement over it's nice smelling but very lame predecessor.

I've been beating the drum about Proraso only being an average soap at best for years, but for some reason people keep pushing it like heroin. It is one of the worst soaps in my arsenal for blade buffing. I just find that it does not lubricate very well and allows too much drag when shaving with a DE razor.

The best Proraso shave that I ever had was with a straight razor at a barber shop in Taormina, Sicily by a professional barber. So it may be a fine performer for straight shavers, but for use with a DE I need something that allows the cap to glide effortlessly behind the blade rather than dragging on the skin.
    Relax...Take it easy...Enjoy the lather.

YMMV but my face did not agree with the menthol. It would ignite my psoriasis, however, my brother enjoys it.

I thought I was the only one who every time I pas the tub I have to open it up and smell. Seriously though the green it is as of now my favorite soap. Didn't even know I liked eucalyptus. If you like the scent it's addictive. LOL

If you aren't a fan of the menthol then it might be tough to get by, but it is a great performer. You could also try the new Red if you the menthol bugs you!

Great bang for the buck and it can be purchased almost anywhere.
How are you fixed for blades?
