    Default The Weishi Fat Boy

I imagine that would start some consternation on these threads, especially given the volatile pricing of Gillette Fat Boys on ebay. Collector pricing in itself wouldn't be enough to drive Weishi to do it, but it wouldn't discourage them either. The design patent for the original expired after 14 years, their Super Speed knock-off has been a success, and as far as I know they don't have an adjustable on the market.

I'd buy one, I'm sure a lot of others here would as well. They could call it the Weishi Fat Choy

From Wikipedia: Fat choy (Nostoc flagelliforme), also known as faat choy, fa cai, black moss, hair moss or hair weed is a terrestrial cyanobacterium (a type of photosynthetic bacteria) that is used as a vegetable in Chinese cuisine. When dried, the product has the appearance of black hair. For that reason, its name in Chinese means "hair vegetable.

I think manufacturing tolerances are a lot more critical for an adjustable so I am not sure if they could make a decent one and keep it profitable.
Joris (not the razor). If you consider it as a hobby, you shave for free.

Yeah, but it wouldn't be a new Fatboy. It would be a new Chinese copy of a Fatboy. Given the manufacturing reputation the Chinese have built, I would need a lot of convincing.

I agree. It is definitely doable, chinese factories can build things to ridiculous tolerances but these tend to be parts sourced for foreign companies. When chinese companies build products to be directly sold to the consumer they usually seem far more concerned about porfit margins and start cutting corners so they can maximize profits which is where all the horrible build quality comes from.

I work for a company who manufactures in China and Taiwan. There is zero consistency in product from one container to the next. The only way to manufacture in China is the way Yamaha and Honda do it. You have to have your own QC engineer on site 24/7 enforcing your QC standards.

I have asked weishi to do work for me and they refused. I do not think they are a shaving company in that respect to developing new products.

Just buy the real thing and flip the Chicomms the bird.

Sometimes the razors that look the worst clean up the best. The 59 Fatboy I bought as a backup cleaned up to near mint condition. You don't have to pay crazy prices.

As mspk1111 said; "When chinese companies build products to be directly sold to the consumer they usually seem far more concerned about porfit margins and start cutting corners so they can maximize profits which is where all the horrible build quality comes from". Substitute the word USA for Chinese and you can see what will happen; history repeats itself. Maybe they will outsource their jobs back to the USA. Wouldn't that be a kick ?

Wow, flashback. The reason I posted this in the first place is that out of idle curiosity I wrote Weishi to see if they'd considered producing an adjustable. The person that responded mentioned he had three different Fatboys on his desk as he wrote.

If it were the quality of their brass TTO, I'd buy one, if aluminum, no.

Made in USA, made in UK, made in Germany, all great stuff. Made in China, cheap. Not great, not even good. Just cheap.
50-60 years from now, how many forums do you think there will be for wet-shaving enthusiast's who collect vintage Chinese razors? I'm laughing as I type it.

Maybe this would be a project Tradere or Weber would be interested in taking on?

I'm surprised at the stigma of cheap and nasty for the chinese goods. Whilst some are admittedly rubbish, you have to understand that its because the consumers/suppliers are pushing down prices to unreasonable levels.

Read this (http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazin...2/shanling.htm). See that? Made in China. You pay what you get. Pay chinese prices, and you will most likely get chinese quality. pay chinese + slight premium and you get a half decent product. pay western prices in china, and you will be sitting relatively comfortable knowing that the quality has increased significantly.

If they are making a Fat Boy or an adjustable I will be completely surprised. We have seen nothing new from this company in years and to launch an intricate razor like that would be a difficult project to say the least.
