bumble and bumble sumotech wax. you just need a little and it provides a nice dry looking hold where your hair doesn't look greasy. i found it worked better for me than american crew.

I have very dry, frizzy and curly hair, hard to find something to control it without drying it out even more. In the past I tried gel after gel after paste after... Finally I found some All Natural Leave In Conditioner by Giovanni that is great. Smells good, controls the friz and doesn't dry out my scalp or hair.

I just started using Groom and Clean about a month ago. The problem I had with gel, mousse or hair spray was if I drove with the window open to work, there was some part of my hair that 'poofed' out and never got back in line. With Groom and Clean, it never quite dries... so it looks like gelled hair, but if you bump your head or mess up your hair, just run your comb or fingers through it and it's fixed. It's water based and washes out easy in the shower, but it holds all day, which is nice.

The down side is it's aroma is definitely something to get used to. It has a smell of someone from the 1950's who worked in sales... but I imagine if you threw in some cologne before you put it in your hair, it would help the situation a bit. It's not rank or overpowering, just a little funky and takes some getting used to.

Grabbed two pucks of American Crew pomade tonight at Target as a BOGO for $16.99. I usually wait for those to clearance out but I figure at half price it's about the same at Axe and the performance is perfect. I took the recommendation about and mixed some Royall Lyme in with my Groom & Clean today and it did the trick so I'm going to keep a little squirt bottle of the stuff just for that for AC and G&C.

I have used all kinds of stuff over the years. I usually rotate between various Redken, American Crew, and Aveda products. On a whim, I grabbed some G&C 2-3 weeks ago. I think I have used it every day but one since. I was a doubter, but it just flat out works for me. Nice hold, not stiff, stays pliable. Like you said... doesn't dry out. I'm a convert and my wallet is going to be a little heavier because of it. Can't beat that.

Oh, and as for the scent, I think it's just fine. I find it sorta fresh and aquatic. Doesn't seem to last long as far as I can tell, and I find it sorta neutral and non-offensive, so I don't have to worry about any clashing with my aftershave.

There must be more than one version. Lol Mine doesn't hold well but makes my hair smooth like conditioner.

    And smells like 5hit. Lol

I use Aveda Grooming Cream. I like it because of it's weak hold and mild, pleasant scent.

Vital Care Gel. I have thick hair so I use the mega hold version. For me it is the best hair styling product I have ever used.

Among many I have used the following:
    Brylcream (greasy)
    Groom & Clean (overwhelming scent)
    American Crew Pomade (not bad)

Groom and Clean, about a quarter sized dollup applied to slightly damp hair. Amazing sheen and can recomb throughout the day and will not dry up like gel....

Thanks to my barber I have recently discovered Jojoba Crystal Wax by Mon Platin, an Israeli company. It is a translucent blue soft wax/firm gel that is water-based so washes out with no effort. It is described as high sheen but I don't find it too shiny myself. It dries to a crisp, springy hold that lasts well and has an amazing scent. I bought a big 250ml pot from my barber for £10 in January and I still have about a third left despite using it daily. I think this is going to be my staple hair product for a long time, although I have only seen it available in my barber shop and online.
