    Default Coticule with oil

Thanks to Paco, I received a razor he honed on a Welch stone with oil and it was fantastic.

I did the same with a Coticule. I honed it as usual using the dilicot methods, finished on plain water, dried everything off. Then I added 2 drops of mineral oil on the stone and finished with 30-40 very light laps. I shaved with it this morning and WOW. Smooth just like a regular coti edge is and much keener.

For those who are worrying about adding oil to your coti, it is not absorbed at all, I just washed the coti after using with soap and water and no residual oil left on the stone.

You must simply try this method, you will not be disappointed.

    Thanks again Paco.

I usually use Mineral Oil, as Scott has directed me to do, with no ill effect to the stone. It is something i try for ultimate smooth shaving edges as a finishing.

Agreed, used after water it helps refine the edge a little further.

I have found that different viscosity oil or glycerin will work better with one stone than another as well. In other words the finer the surface the thinner the oil but as with anything ymmv. I have not found that oil works better for every stone as Gary said his best edges are from water. On some stones my best edges are from water as well but La Grise seems seems to favor a heavy mineral oil.

How does that ultra-refined edge hold up?

Cool. I'll have to try a few finishing strokes with some oil on my coti.

I don't know the layer, but I'll report back what I can. I'm still really learning my way on hones, so take my results with a grain of salt.

I don't have a coticule. Would I be a fool to try oil on lapping film?
    Uh-oh.

You'd be a fool not to try something at least once.

I would start a thread or post in a thread already open about lapping films because chances are either Honed or Seraphim has tried it and maybe Paco664. If thats the case they can give you some pointers. As fine as the films are I would try something like WD40 or 3in1 oil as far as viscocity of the oil. Paint thinner for art supplies may also be the ticket as it works well as a honing oil also.

I am the guilty party that sent Al the razor honed on oil...

I love finishing razors on oil... Superbly sharp but yet somehow not harsh....

MY theory *(take grain of salt here please)... The oil increases the fineness of the stones... Thereby taking a 15k Welsh slate out to 18~20k....

Last night i honed up my jap frameback and finished it on my translucent arkie with .5dia slurry in oil... Then i diluted it further with sewing machine oil... Wonderfully smooth...

I haven't tried oil on the coti yet... But i have razors to hone when i get home...Lol

Al i'm glad this is working good for you!

Old manuals and boxes for coticules mention the use of oil as a vehicle for enhanced sharpening.

IME the harder the stone the lighter oil can be used with success, such as light sewing machine oil. On softer stones mineral oil is thicker and seems to work better.
