    Post Distracted driving

I have seen a lot of things during commutes to work. Women putting on makeup, booking reading, news paper reading, texting. But this morning I saw a man shaving with an electric razor. Bad enough his not paying attention to the road, but an electric razor in the car on the way to work (I'll guess). I was shocked...

I've seen that here in Japan pretty often, although to be fair, the people here are the worst drivers i've ever seen.

If I recall correctly, some of the early TV commercials for electric razors even promoted shaving in the car.

This used to be how I shaved when driving to base in the morning. Traffic outside of base would take 20-30 minutes and provided the perfect opportunity to shave, or so I thought as a 19 yr old that didn't know any better.

I read an article somewhere that distracted drivers kill more than drunk drivers...

    Cool

Several years ago, while working two jobs, I didn't always have time to shave properly between one job and the other. I shaved in the car often, with no mirror, using one or another Norelco rechargeable. It wasn't really a good shave, and it didn't require enough mental attention to interfere with safe driving practices.

Far more frequently, though, I used that shaver after the second job, instead of before it, when I was lucky enough to have a late evening social engagement.

With an electric it takes about two minutes to look shaven. I remember some movies and TV show that would show somebody shaving behind the wheel.

I once saw a guy playing a guitar while driving on the freeway.

See, straight-razor users don't do dumb stuff like that. At least, the living ones don't.

i think i remember that too. it was the "cool", time saver, thing to do.
only time i ever saw a person do it was on the ferry ride to the mainland. (acceptable i suppose) i lived on an island.

That's why you never drive in Japan. Just either walk, bicycle, or train :)

I've done that. IMO, it's a whole lot less distracting than tuning the radio (assuming you're not looking in the rear view mirror).

Honestly, how much concentration does it actually take to run a razor over one's face? (The answer, practically ZERO) In all reality it takes just about as much concentration as scratching your head or feeling your face to see how your shave went this morning. It certainly takes FAR less concentration than changing a radio station, Far less concentration that LISTENING to the radio, taking a sip of coffee, cola, water, talking to your passenger, thinking about that presentation your are going to be giving etc.

I certainly have enough brain capacity to rub an object on my face while driving. (I do NOT, however, have the brain capacity to listen to a loud radio if I'm requiring concentration - when I am in very heavy traffic, trying to find an address etc, I find myself automatically turning the radio off.) There is absolutely no skill involved in electric shaving, doesn't require you to take your eyes off the road (unlike checking your speed, looking at your gas gauge, oil pressure, water temperature, changing the volume on a radio, looking at the radio station, looking at the sky to see if it's going to rain, pick up a drink, open the lid, replace it in a cup holder.

Think about it, someone using an electric razor in their car while driving to work isn't thinking "BBS Shave" here... They aren't stretching their skin with their free hand, worrying about a stray whisker, or rubbing their face to find that tiny patch of 3 or 4 hairs that needs "buffing" to remove.

Unless you duct-tape your and your passengers mouth shut, remove the radio from your car, and never take a sip of any sort of liquid in your (moving) car, worrying about someone rubbing an object on their beard area is kind of silly.

20 years ago I used to do that all the time. In fact my electric resided in my car, the only time it came into the house was every 3 or 4 weeks to get charged. (Granted it was on a 30 mile/35 minute commute through open country where I *might* see 4 other cars on a typical morning, but I'm very familiar with the lack of any concentration or skill required to do such a procedure.)
Brian - I think it would be totally inappropriate for me to even contemplate what I am thinking about.
