Default Would like to leave "karma" (mini comments) in posts

I'm on a fan page that allows "karma" to be left. The way it works is that someone writes a post, and if you agree, to can leave a comment. It's great for short comments, or when you just want to agree. For example, if someone posts...

The Semogue 620 is a great brush

The I can leave karma and a little comment, like "I love mine" or "Mine is in the mail."

I have no idea how you software works, or if this is an option, but it would work great on B&B.

That sounds the same as the Like feature that I see on many boards. This forum software does offer it but is purposefully left out. There was some discussion about the Like feature some years back.

I am a member of a site that as a karma system, I have seen it get ugly, especially when someone can leave bad karma with comments.

And that's why there isn't a Like feature here.

Half the posts on this site are already mini comments. Check the clownhouse if you're not sure.

That site had some issues too, so they tweaked it so there wasn't any karma point accumulation.

The difference is that "I agree" type posts clog up the thread. It's just so much easier to leave karma. It's different that a "like" button, because this one allows you to leave a short comment.

I think it was better to have people post their opinion, than to have a one post thread with 20 likes and 5 dislikes.

there is some level of contribution even in a "+1".. it's one way to show agreement without restating exactly what the person said.

    Default Like or Thanks button

I think there should be a thanks or like button in the forum. Members can earn reputation when a post is liked or thanked by other members.

Great thought but I believe this would fall under the same fate of cred/rep given for posts. They turn into a "I'll like yours if you like mine" situation more often than not. It simply becomes another arbitrary way to judge someone's perceived ability to answer a question in the same way people judge others by post count and join date.

If you appreciate what someone's said then why not reply and let them know?

On a related note, I've always felt that 'like' bottons were a easy way of saying "I agree with you and enjoy what you said but I'm too lazy to type a response." The same could be said to those that quote and entire post and then simply write "+1 "

I'm sure there will now be several '+1' quoting my post

+1.. I hate forums which have this sort of system in place usually stating a certain member has "reputation beyond reputation" or some such silly thing. It would make new members uncomfortable and make a lot of active, helping members feel left out for no reason whatsoever.
