Newbie needing buying advice

Hey guys, So I've been lurking here for a couple weeks on and off and I finally decided to be done with electric shaving. I have semi sensitive skin and i'm very prone to ingrown hairs. I'm wanting to order a brush, stand, and soap/cream and i'm trying to stay under $35. I have 2 options, The Van Der Hagen Luxury set that has soap, stand, badger brush, and cup. Or a Parker synthetic shaving brush and a tube of CO Bigelo premium menthol shave cream with eucalyptus oil. Both options come around just under $35.

So.. any ideas? lol :wacko:

Welcome. I'm not sure how the menthol and eucalyptus would do for a sensitive face. Have you looked at Proraso for sensitive skin? I think it's only in a tub, and I like it a lot. Very creamy, smooth lather. Loads of lubrication.

For a few more bucks you should also look at Proraso's pre/post shave or some kind of pre-shave oil. That would help a lot with sensitive skin in avoiding razor burn. Remember, you don't have to follow conventional wisdom and do the 3-pass shave from the very beginning. Start out with 1 pass at first and add 2nd pass after a week or two, then add a 3rd--only if you need it. I generally do only two passes even now: WTG and ATG. It works for me, but YMMV.

I'm not super sensitive, I have used face washes in the past with menthol in them and was fine, but anything that has alcohol is a no go. I've been using thayers alcohol free witch hazel as a aftershave of sorts and it does seem to help. I did see a pre shave oil on amazon that was only a couple dollars and had tons of great reviews so I can definitely get that

Edit: Is this the one you were talking about?

Thanks for the welcomes :) I just placed my order, I got the synthetic brush, cella shaving soap, and an alum block.

I'm a little too wary of safety razors but maybe one day I'll give it a try.

~~~yeah, skip the DE's and go straight for one of these
Welcome and glad to see that you are jumping in. You will get better shaves with a brush even if you use a cartridge razor. This forum is about improving your shave and that's what you will be doing. Enjoy your shaves :)
Welcome to B&B! Cella shave soap is supposed to be one of the best soaps available in this mortal coil without using a tallow soap made from unicorn fat and the tears of angels. I wouldn't know, I haven't tried it. Check out Kyle's Prep as a great place to start your wet-shaving journey. As long as you use minimal pressure and pay careful attention to your prep, you will get much better shaves. You may not actually have sensitive skin, it may be red and inflamed from inadequately moisturizing and lubricating shave cream and an overly-aggressive shave technique.
And here's some food for thought: if you were to tell a man from the thirties, forties, and fifties that people would be shaving with three, four, and five razors they would say "Great Scott! They must cut themselves all the time!"
