Default First Post: Shaving Bowl Question

Hello. This is my first post. I tried to searching to find if there was a similar thread, but couldn't find anything immediately. My question is, do any of you guys not rinse the shaving bowl out after each shave so that you can reuse the residue the next day? I do it all the time... I can usually get 2 to 3 shaves out of an originally filled with lather shaving bowl.

    Welcome to B&B

I always clean up everything, dry it and put it away. This includes my lather bowls.

Back years ago when I face lathered I would not rinse out my soap mug, I would add hot water to it to soften the soap, pour it out then load my brush but I did not rinse out what was in the soap mug with the puck after I finished shaving.

So there you have 2 answers to your question, depending on whether you are talking about a lather bowl or a soap mug. A lather bowl is used to build a lather in. A soap mug is used to store you soap puck in.

Thanks for the reply. I was talking about the lather bowl. If I have left over lather, something in me feels silly about throwing it away when I can just use it the next day.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum!

I always rinse the lather bowl thoroughly, the film the left over lather creates makes it look dirty to me. But if it helps you with a better lather at the next shave, then that's excellent. But do remember to clean the bowl once a week or so.

I only clean it when I use a new cream/soap.

Thanks. I clean it when I run out of lather, which is usually every two or three days.

Yes. I also squeeze out into a cup any drops of water that may have hit my towel during each shave. I collect them all after a month or two and then use them to fill the sink for a full shave.

I'm about half-way to making my own knot using hairs that have fallen out of my brushes over time.

And I'm gradually saving up the little dabs of wax from razor blade wrappers to make a year 2038 Christmas candle.

What about the microscopic bits that fall off the blade? What a shame you're not saving those.

That's a little mean, he was asking a serious question, and as his first post too, I don't know that mocking is in order.

That said, if you had followed it up with "... bazinga!", I would have found that funny.

Back to your question OP, I think you are probably pretty unique in doing that, but what the heck, if you want to do it who am I to judge? I personally wash and dry all the stuff I use after each one.

Do you loose scent or slickness?

I clean and rinse everything - bowl, brush, razor, blade. I like shaving with clean and fresh equipment each shave.

If I'm careful how I rehydrate it, it comes out the same as the original.

If it works for you, why not? It makes sense that it could work. I think I will stick with cleaning my bowl, but if times get hard, who knows?

    noooo... c'mon. thats just ridiculous.

but seriously, i wash it out every time. as it is, a puck of soap lasts for so long. im not gonna sweat a hand ful of lather.

I wash mine out after every use, I like starting with sparkling equipment before every use. I also love warm lather and pre-heat my bowl, so any if any residue left behind it would be washed out.

actually the more i think about this, the more i am pretty sure it's a really good idea. iiiiiiiiiii think i'm gonna start doing this and just learning how to rehydrate it properly. i frequently have a substantial amount of leftover lather.

    great idea.

If it works for you that's great, I heat my cup with extremely hot water and clean up after every shave.
So this wouldn't work for me.
I did buy some sandlewood oil yesterday to add to my unscented creme thou. Not being cheap (the oil was expensive) I just wanted something that smelt good & was pure.

What soap/cream do you use? Those are some awesome results you're achieving with a single lather lasting 3 days. Either that or you are using too much product. How much product do you use? For example, compared to the mass of an almond, do you use 2 almonds' worth, more/less?
