Smile "Another" NEW Proraso Green Formula Review

I recieved my tub of the newly formulated Green Proraso this morning, and knew I would have to give it a try this evening. I started DE shaving with Proraso 2 months ago, and although I've sampled quite a few creams, it still remains as one of my favorites, so needless to say, I was excited about getting the new stuff.

The "old" Proraso I have is out of a tube, and the new stuff I purchased in the tub, as I prefer tubs. I believe this would be considered a "hard" cream, it is not soft inside the tub. Upon an initial sniff test, both products seemed to be exactly the same, but this changed once I lathered them.

I decided to try both creams at the same time, as to give them a fair test, each one on each side of my face. I test lathered the old stuff once, and the new stuff 2 times to "learn" it. I used my restored EverReady brush with a 20mm TGN finest knot for the "old" stuff, and a Ken Shaving 20mm Finest Brush for the New Line. Both where lathered in seperate, but similar sized metal bowls. My prep was a shower, and face cleansing with a glycerin soap by Nuetrogena, and the Proraso Pre-shave cream prior to lather application. I used my Gillette SuperSpeed Flare Tip (I believe it is a 54') with a brand new Gillette 7OC Black Blade.

The old stuff, is well, we all know, a mighty fine product, especially for the price. Now the New product, I can say, IS different. Keep in mind, my old stuff is in the tube, and the new stuff is in a tub, don't know if this could make for much of a difference.

First off, the smell, it is still mentholated, but it seems a bit muted, and it is a different menthol; where with the old stuff I get that Vicks Vapor Rub kinda menthol, the new stuff... is not that. It is not bad, and IMO, I like it much better, it is just, different.

The new product seems to lather much better than the old. It lathers much more like a luxury English Cream, and I like it! So on the face it goes, the left side being the new product, and the right side being the old. I can tell a difference with the new stuff, feels much more creamy. I completed a 2 pass shave, 1 WTG, 1 XTG, and can say they both performed amazing, as expected, with the new line performing marginaly better; it seems to cushion my blade a bit better. After rinsing my face off with cold water, I noticed that the side that had the newer product seemed to be more moisturized, and i'm chalking this up to the new product being paraben free.

So all in all, I love the new stuff, it is not a huge difference, just a couple minor ones that, overall, impress me. Of course, with everything in life, YMMV, but I'm definately happy with my purchase.... Hope you enjoyed the read, i tried to keep it quick and too the point...

Hmmm....one of the things I like about Proraso is the "Vapo-Rub" scent.
I have not ordered the new tub yet, but this will be interesting.

I enjoyed it as well, but I like this "new menthol" it has. It's not too far off, it's just different.

I was getting ready to write my short review, but so as not to start another thread on the same subject, I hope you don't mind me posting here. I also shared this on another forum, shhhhh.....

Well, my New Proraso arrived in Thursday's mail so I used it this morning. I will make this brief since this is just a newly formulated product most of us are familiar with.

The first thing you notice is the packaging. Now I got this from Italian Barber who imported it direct from Italy, so there is a lot of Italian writing on it. I'm sure the product Bigelow imports will have more english on it.

First thing I did was give it the smell test and I noticed it does not have that strong medical smell some refer to. I believe it has less eucalyptus than the old formula.

Next was to build a lather in my scuttle. Wow! There is no problem there. Whipped up a nice creamy lather in no time.

Again, that medical smell is not as strong when lathered.

This new formula is slicker than the old product. Not sure what makes it that way, but it is.

I believe Proraso has a winner here.

This shave was done with the tube cream. Saturday I will use the tub and if there is any difference in performance I will report it.

It's a little disappointing to read that the scent has changed. The thing I liked most about the CO Bigelow cream I owned temporarily was the wonderful scent. It had the menthol, but also had the earthy and pungent eucalyptus aspect to it... it was invigorating. It was mint, but on a different level.

Hoping the new scent will be to my liking.

I think you will like it. The scent is still there, just not as strong.

The better moisturizing property of the new version would have nothing to do with the lack of parabens, rather it's more likely because the new version doesn't have Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which can really dry out your skin. SLS is a detergent and a surfactant. It's used to make dish detergent. It cuts grease really well but it also strips the oils from your skin. The new ingredient Sodium Lauryol Sarcosinate is also a surfactant but is much less harsh than the sulfate and is much easier on the skin.

I agree with your assessment about the new version having a very creamy lather and lathering better than the old. I remember not being all that impressed with Bigelow but the new Proraso is amazing stuff.

I would have to agree with Johnny and Mike....I use the Proraso green in the tub regularly and just received my new formula tub from Italian Barber. I used the new formula this morning and all comments listed above are spot on....I'm still going to use the "original" version as I still have a tub and tube left but I have a funny feeling that I'll be reaching for the new formula more often.

I'm almost out of my old tube, might have to try some of this new formula. Tub or tube is the only question now...
