I've used matches only when lighting my pipe but found a local store that carries zippos. Is the quality is still what it use to be on a zippo lighter?

I think so, some are put off by the fluid but they are as reliable as they ever were.

I have one and I love it. Zippo's still Zippo.
I've got one and it's quite good, though the fuel evaporates really quickly. I'm thinking about getting a butane insert for mine.

I picked one up recently and it seems quite solid. My only complaint is that (for obvious reasons) it gets hot pretty quickly when it's on its side - so if you are having trouble getting your pipe lit / getting it to stay lit it can be annoying.

If you are seroius about the taste of your tobac , use a match and let the sulpher burn off or go with a butane, there is no taste with the gas. The lighter fluid has a taste and you can taste it. How do I know.....experience told me so.
Hmmm. I get about 2 weeks per fill, and it gets lit once or twice every day.
When I light a cigar or pipe I just light and count to 4 and all the taste is gone, at least for me.
You can make your own pipe lighter out of a regular Zippo by just drilling a 3/16-1/4 inch hole on each side of the windscreen, super easy to do. Still functions fine as a regular lighter.

I'm with mdove7... The lighter fluid taints the flavor of one's pipe tobacco. The pipe Zippo is a good quality lighter and it'll light your pipe quickly and easily but I gave mine to a buddy because I couldn't get past the lighter fluid taste and it hangs around unlike the match flavor.
I mentioned this in another thread, but I got a zippo with a pipe insert (holes on the sides) pre-installed from a guy on ebay that sells them this way for just the price of the zippo. I like the pipe insert a lot. Zippo only ships them in a couple of styles, but this guy sells all kinds of zippos with the pipe insert.
I let mine burn for a few seconds and don't get any taste issues.
One trick to this to smear the outside of the insert with a thin layer of Vaseline or Vicks after filling. It keeps the fluid from evaporating as quickly. Trick taught to me by a deployed soldier. Another thing I've noticed, which I wouldn't believe it without experiencing myself is that the Zippo fluid lasts longer than the big yellow-bottle Ronson fluid. I don't know what they do differently, but there is a noticeable difference in the taste, smell, burn and longevity of the fluid.
You also need to replace the packing once in a while because over time it no longer holds in as much fluid.

Though I've never used a Zippo to light a pipe, I use one regularly for cigarettes and, as many have already said, they are still the same quality as ever.

I do find I get the fluid taste once in a while, even when I let it burn for a few. And I am using the Zippo brand fluid.
