    Default Sulfate Free Shampoos

    Hey guys,

I've looking to buy a good, affordable shampoo specifically for my mom that is free of sulfate. She's got thinning hair and now that she's much older, I'm just trying my best to be a good son in providing safe and helpful products for everyday use.

I've been doing research and I've found one that seems alright, L'Oreal's Everpure. However, it's expensive for the amount you receive and it's not as pure as the name suggests. Although, better than most commercial shampoos.

If there's a shampoo that is free of sulfates and preservatives, please share so that we all can benefit. I wish businesses weren't so bent on making easy profit, but actually helping to better people's lives. Is that too much to ask?

Naked Naturals is a good brand that I used to use. I only stopped using it because it's hard to find in stores. You can get it from drugstore.com.

I now use something called... hold on... Oh, get this, it's called SHAMPOO. It's made by Whole Foods. I got it at... Whole Foods. It comes in different varieties. There's even a fragrance free one, which was just weird. I'm using a citrus scented one for oily hair. It does a good job. My hair dresser told me that my hair is squeaky clean. Anyway, SHAMPOO (made by Whole Foods and sold at Whole Foods) comes in different varieties and mine cost, I believe, $2.50 for a 16 fl. oz. bottle.

So, if you're looking for a sulfate free shampoo, try Shampoo. Or try Naked Naturals.

There are plenty of sulfate free shampoos out there if you look a bit. I've tried the following:

    EO Products: http://www.amazon.com/EO-Sulfate-Ker...2770230&sr=8-1

    Kiss my face: http://www.amazon.com/Kiss-My-Face-W...2770264&sr=8-1

    Nature's gate: http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Gate-C...2770287&sr=8-1

Of the three, I'd rank the kiss my face as the best, followed by the EO.

    Hope this helps.

Chagrin Valley makes a very nice shampoo bar.
It was highly recommended here, I tried it and it's now all I use.

Thanks guys. I haven't heard of a lot of these brands before. Sadly, I only know brands that are available in my local market. I'll be sure to check these out. I'll get back to this thread once I find something my mom likes.

A few months back I met an older hippy lady at a Victorian Christmas fair in Puyallup, WA. She talked my ears off and I ended up buying all of her herbed liquors that she had, as well as a bottle of some amazing aurvedic shampoo. I use it on my beard because I don't have "top" hair, but it is just amazing. Made with all natural herbs and spices, smells great ,doesn't take a lot to start a lather. http://juliasgoodmedicine.com/Ayurvedic.html

Check some of your local stores like TJ Maxx and other discount department stores.
It seems unlikely that they would have stuff like that, but at my Winners store (same as TJ Maxx) I find the strangest things pop up.
Sometimes they have organic/natural products for a fairly good price.

I quite like the organix stuff, it's suplhate free.

The LOTH uses the keratin ones, I use the coconut ones as I love the smell of coconut.

You should be able to find some of these at your local Target/grocery/drug store like Kiss My Face, Burt's Bees, Jason's and Tom's of Maine.

Also check out Dermaorganic shampoo. Online it can be purchased affordably.

In Sweden there is a brand called DAX that the hospitals use. They have a 'Cleansing Cream' that is sulfate free.

    http://www.opushc.se/ProductItem.asp?id=81

Personally I use DAX or sometimes a superfatted regular soap that I later up and then I put a few pumps of sunflower oil into my palms. I massage it into my scalp and hair. The hard soap I use is tar + sulphur soap Reporia or my Noble Zinc soap

L'oreal released a line of sulfate-free shampoo and conditioners not too long ago. It's known as the 'evercreme' and 'eversleek' line of shampoo and conditioners. I started using the 'evercreme' and have liked the results so far (and i'm a guy). plus at about $6 per 8.5oz bottle it's much cheaper than what i was paying for with other shampoos so it's not only friendly on the hair but friendly on the wallet as well. the good thing is you don't have to search high and low for it since it's available at probably every drug store.

edit: i completely missed the part where you already found this line of shampoo in your post. $6 still not bad though. most will easily run you 10-12+ for something similar. you don't have to use a lot in your hair so it should last a decent amount of time.

My wife and I have been trying to use more natural products and limit the use of parabens and sulfates. I am using a trial shampoo had from chagrin valley and really like it, but my wife has both Kiss My Face and Organix shampoos and conditioner. I really like the organix. Mint smells good and its more similar to traditional/massmarket shampoos in that it lathers well and gives a nice clean feeling. IMO

After checking out and researching all the suggestions and trying out various products, my mom and I are leaning to permanently using the Chagrin Valley Shampoo Bars. They have a wide selection, and their Herb Garden Shampoo Bar appears to have the desired result of strengthening and thickening hair. The 7oz bars are huge and will last a long time.

The Mystic Water Soap Shampoo Bar is another great one, but they only have one type of shampoo bar. Although, they have some awesome accessories on their sites. I'll probably purchase some later.

Also, we wanted to like the Kiss My Face Shampoo, but it seems to be too drying.

I just want to thank everyone for all your suggestions. I hope other people may have benefited from the sundry of shampoo options that have been listed so far.

May we all be better informed and use better products for ourselves and for our loved ones.

Every Man Jack makes a nice sulfate free shampoo, I have also used Loreal EverStrong and its pretty good too. I tried the naked naturals and while I liked the scent, it dries my scalp for some reason.

$2.50 for a 16 oz bottle is a really good price, how would you describe their citrus scent? I know that sounds like an odd question but I have smelled "citrus scents that have either an orange, lemon, or lime smell. I like those scents. I have also smelled products with a "citrus" scent that has grapefruit or apple scents, I don't like those. Thanks.

I totally missed your response. I apologize.

I am actually changing my verdict on Shampoo by Whole Foods. It's... okay. I don't feel that it cleans my hair well enough. That said, it is very cheap, so maybe worth trying. Might work better for you. I have particularly oily hair.

As far as the scent, I just looked at the bottle and it mentions lime, grapefruit and orange, which is pretty much what it smells like - a mixture of those three.

Going to Whole Foods later today to see what other options they have. I might try the Kiss My... Face stuff.

They should have Every Man Jack. Try their 2-in-1. SLS free. Silicone free. I've had oily/itchy scalp and this stuff works great, dare I say better than some expensive salon stuff I've used. Just make sure to follow the directions by generating a bit of lather in your hands before applying. The stuff is very thick and won't spread easily otherwise.

You're too late! I bought the Kiss My Face stuff! If I don't like it, I will try Every Man Jack.

This stuff smells pretty good. Lime and something else. It's called "Whenever."

I think the problem with the Whole Foods brand shampoo, Shampoo, was that it had absolutely no foaming action at all. It was like a thick, scented water. I stand by the Naked Naturals stuff. It's impossible to find, though. I think you have to order it online.

I've been using Aubrey Organics Blue Chamomile. I like it a lot, but it's on the pricey side. Think I'll give the Whole Foods stuff a try when I run out - thanks, SalvadorMontenegro!
