I've been busy with work and a sick parent but I have a short break and am catching up with BOTOC.

WOW, go away for a week and this thread jumps 15 pages, the rise of the Fatip continues and Ken develops a fascination for a Darwin.

    Strange days indeed.

A case of YMMV...or moreso, My Mileage may Vary

So I'm quite a few shaves in with the R41 with great success...minus the 1 reported shave with a good bit of irritation. Maybe it was the blade, maybe it was the lather, not sure. Moving on. I had tried Derby blades in my EJ89, Tech and LC New and had ZERO success. It tore my face up like a cheese grater, so I had set them aside for household chores. A week or so ago, I read a comment on a thread from Turtle saying the Derby was great in the R41. I figured "he knows what he's talking about" so why not give it a go. I did, and got a DFS. Not perfect, but no nicks/cuts/irritation.

I had purposely let it grow over the weekend, to give the R41 a bit of a test on multiple days growth. When I reached for the blade, the 1 day old Derby was sitting there. I loaded it up without hesitation (well, maybe a bit). Normal preshave routine, lathered up with some RR Nonno Michelino and started my shave. Immediately I noticed it was extremely smooth. The audible feedback from the R41 is like no other, and it was no different with this shave. I could hear every whisker being mowed down and that's such a cool sound. First pass went flawless WTG. I expected good reduction, but this was great. Frankly, I probably couldve stopped here. I pressed ahead with my 2nd, XTG. It too went smooth with the extremely slick lather RR provides, and the Derby doing a fine job. I felt the face when rinsing and there was just slight stubble. I thought to myself, why not? I went for the ATG/BBS. Sure enough! The 3rd pass was just as smooth as the first and I absolutely had a BBS! I'm standing in front of the mirror, facerbating. Finished off with some WH and Bay Rum with very little burn at all. Quite possibly the best DE shave I've had to date - which is saying something because I've gotten some great shaves with my FaTip and LC New. There is no question this R41 has a place with me. So do the Derby's.

I am really surprised that the Derby did not work well for you in the DE89! It was the first blade I tried when I got that razor and the shave was extremely smooth and bbs. In fact, the DE89 was the only razor other then the Weber that the Derby ever did any real good for me.
I no longer have the DE89, but still have all the Derby blades because I have not yet found another razor that likes the blade.
I would give that Derby and the DE89 another try to make sure it was not the lather or the user that had the problem before. It happens!!

I will. Although that would me I have to put the OC down :(

In all seriousness, it was probably user error. When I was a network administrator we called that an ID-10-T error.

I can understand not wanting to put the OC down. What I do and just did again this morning is shaved with my Tech with a 7 O'Clock Blue blade. I switch back and forth from Tech to OC just so I can appreciate both razors more. I can really appreciate the super closeness I only get with the OC, and I really appreciate the super speed in which I can shave with no worries with the Tech. Using both razors make me appreciate the other so much that it is a true enjoyment that I get two completely different shaves. This all may sound nuts to some, but it is my true feelings.

To the defense of frequent 1D-10-T errorers, sometimes the problem is just a short between the keyboard and the chair.

I haven't done this on the face...but I do use the EJ89 on the head when the R41 is in play. One day I may not, but the EJ is like using training wheels...

Great post Big, the R41 is a worthwhile razor, its an acquired taste that will get the job done, but you must master that tricky technique 1st.

Took a break from the OC's this morning to shave with a Frankenrazor.

The head was from a Stahly Live Blade razor and the handle was from an EJ DE89L.

Very, very smooth. First shave with the Stahly head, and I have to say I was very impressed.

I have actually gotten to the point where the R41 is a safer shave for me than the FaTip Grande. Virtually every time I shave with the FaTip I draw some red somewhere. Not so with the R41. Might have to do with audible feedback. Might have to do with blade overlap/angle on the FaTip - but that thing will take off your skin if you let it.

Ah yes, the famous id10t code indicating a keyboard to chair interface issue... :-)

That really surprising. is the blade properly aligned and not too tight?

Sweet. I thought I was the only one.

What handle do you use it with? Do you use the original handle? I'm thinking about trying it on the Tradere handle sometime this week. The head design is really quite good; in my opinion a step up from the EJ DE89/Muhle R89 design.
