Brotherhood of the Open Comb

Although not yet a member of the brotherhood, I remain strangely drawn to the aesthetics of the open comb. Being in the grip of an extreme case of RAD and needing to own every razor NOW (I've got and ball handle Old in gold so I must need another in Silver) I snagged this beauty from Ebay.

Following cleaning advice found on this vast resource it scrubbed up quite well, just a small crack to sort and it'll be good for another 80 Years

That cleaned up beautifully!! I think with that fine razor you need to join the brotherhood!!

I finally got around to shaving with my Fatip Grande today. That was quit nice. I found it right in the middle between a New and the R41 in terms of efficiency - a good place to be. I can shave with it just about as quickly as I can a New, but it's closer to the R41 in the results department. I used my usual Feather blade + Arko.

Now, the disappointment... I didn't realize that it won't work with the iKon Bulldog handle... Nooooooooooo! I got by with the handle it comes with (with some Alum help...too slippery!). All in all, a great head/razor, just a tad disappointing the Bulldog won't work. My lead-shot weighted fat tech handle doesn't work either. Haven't tried the BRW I have, but will. What about the Weber Bulldog..anyone?

My ikon works...it feels a little loose till it buts righ up, but no problems once its on....see my pic below...



It is the only handle I've been using in my Fatip....

Alex I have a feeling a new r41 is coming out for 2012,it seems that is the trend from Muele and the r41.

Yeah, there's not much else in the DE world that surpasses the first-pass efficiency of the FaTip. In fact, a few days ago I did a little experiment. I shaved the left side of my face and neck with the FaTip/Astra SP combo, and I shaved the right side of my face with a modern gizmo (the Schick Hydro 3, to be exact). First pass was pretty much equivalent; slightly better on the FaTip side. Second pass was no comparison. FaTip all the way. Amount of stubble at 5 pm again favored the FaTip.

Great comparison, my fav razor the Fatip/Joris.

Another step forward with the Fatip Grande today - I did a head shave with it.

There was a 7 o'c black in it, which I'd done a couple of face shaves with, and I felt like a change from my usual head shaving razor, the Open Comb Micromatic.

And it was great. It's more efficient than the OCMM, and got closer quicker, so it could become my regular for the job.

It did, however, highlight one advantage of the OCMM. As the blade corners are protected by being under the nubs, they're not exposed to nick yourself with - and I managed to nick the top of my ear with the corner of the blade in the Fatip. A quick dab of styptic stopped it straight away, so it's no problem - but it's something I need to remember and be careful of.

OUch! that ear bite must have stung.

This morning I decided to do a shave using my favorite hardware and my favorite software.

Lathered up some Mystic Waters Lime with my Rudy Vey-restored butterscotch Klenzo brush in finest badger. Got an awesome, fragrant lather.

First pass was with the FaTip. Second pass with the Fatboy. Clean up with the Fatboy.


What an awesome shave.


Interesting that my favorite open comb starts with the letters "F," "A," and "T," and so does my favorite safety bar razor.

Gary...another great photo...BUT...I'm more curious about the brush....that is a H.I.S synthetic ,correct? Have you tried it next to the Muhle Fibre brush??? Curious how that performs, and how soft it is compared to a Silvertip Badger....most reviews of the Muhle are excellent.......( Alex LOVES the Muhle Silver Fibre)....but I haven't seen much on this brush.

On a serious note, she is the most generous and kindest person I know. If more people where as kind as her, the world would be a better place.
