Just a personal observation, but after trying several different brands of blades from SI to Derby's in Old OC razors, I found the closest and smoothest shave came by using Gillette Yellows. YMMV but I may have found the one for me.

Now my sad story. Bought a R41 from Connaughtshaving and a Gillette New LC from ebay more than 20 days ago. None has reached me. May be lost or stuck in Customs. Although I'll get refund through Paypal but my search for a OC is still on.
If anybody selling a new LC, let me know. I have a mail fowarding address in NY (which I didn't use in earlier two cases). So, shipping will be to CONUS only.

After two and a half weeks of exclusively using my 1912 I returned to my 11C today!!

I have gotten sloppy and paid for it with a chin full of weepers... which is hard to do with a razor this mild!

If you were using those Feather's that may have been part of your problem. I have no experience with the 11C, and while I like Feathers, I think the combination may have equaled something a bit too aggressive for a person starting out with OC razors.
However, that being said, I had to trade in my 2011 R-41 because it was way too aggressive for me no matter what blade I tried in the darn thing, BUT, had great success with the 2010 OC R-41, my favorite OC.

Came back to the LC NEW this morning, at least for the first pass.

Have to say that my Fatboy on 5 removes more stubble on the first pass than the NEW. Still a good, irritation-free first pass, though.

Second pass and clean-up was with my Tech head on a Tradere handle. I call this combination "The Gentle Giant." Makes the Tech huge, but it's still a mild and smooth shaver.

I like the Yellows too...but only with specific razors. I'm not a fan with the R41, but like them in my New and also in my Slim. If you haven't tried the Blacks, your really owe it to yourself to try them.

Shave angle is going to be different on the NEW as compared to a fatboy or tech...so there is somewhat of a learning curve, but I do find the NEW very intuitive. Once you have it "dialed in"...I can get about the same stubble removal from the NEW as a Fatboy on 7 or so..

There were some good things said about them at my blade test, when I compared Blacks and Yellows.

In fact, my next shave is going to be with a Black in a Fatip - I'll let you know how it goes.

(On the subject of my blade tests, I'd quite like to be able to do head-to-head tests using OCs, but that would need two identical razors - hmm, maybe just one more Fatip wouldn't hurt the bank balance too much )

BTW, I enjoy your blade observations. At the same time I'm kind of annoyed because I've had to buy more blades to conduct these test myself...

One of the things we learn early on is...YMMV....but I have heard TONS of favorable reviews....it is what prompted me to try them....and I am very glad I did. As Alan will attest from his excellent blade reviews....the Black truly is a wonderful balde....bit like so many other things here....one mans love is another mans hate. For example....I LOVE the Supermax Super Platinium blades, and have been "selling" there superior shave to everyone....but yet some people just loath this blade...comparing it to a used soap can lid....

My best advice on blades...get a good sampler...or drop razor blades and more and see if he will sample you a few to try, and as always, make up your own mind. I have also found Blades to be very razor specific.....I LOATHED Derby's....but find them very nice in the R41....go figure.

There always seems to be a new flavor of the month, both in blades and razors...thats why I have purchased many type of razors and blades, so I can make up my own mind instead of just believing the hype. And who knows...you may find a combo that everyone is scratching there heads over going WTF? but as long as it works for you is all that matters.

So you use the Derby's only in the R41? I have been using Personna Meds. I have some Derbys, I'll give them a try.

NO...I think you took that wrong.....I use a variety of blades in the R41... my fav in the R41 is the Super Iridium....but the R41 is my only razor so far that I can use a Derby in......every other razor the Derby's seem to pull and tug like crazy!!
