    Default R41?

Well I had been racking my brain researching ( B&B ) and trying to decide what 21st century razor I wanted for my birthday. Many of you and your experiences that have been posted here led me to a very tough decision.....I went with a Muhle R101 Black handle. It arrived yesterday but I didn't have a chance to use it until today. I know the R41 seems to be the favorite among the Muhle fans but I really like the black handle. I think there is a 10g difference between the two. Anybody else have a 101?

bluesbishop: Your assumption about Fatip and Joris re heads, perhaps the bases only, kind of makes sense. So many have said the Fatip is a poor man's Joris, of sorts. But the radom lug/thread-size is unexplainable. Unless Fatip orders their head tops for many different sources scattered about lesser-quality manufacturing nations and facilities. We've seen inconsistencies from China-based manufacturers of various products--this may be a similar 'thing' from who knows where the head tops are manufactured or from what kind of materials. I was originally going to try and R41, was curious about the R101, but heard and read too many horror stories from users; and perhaps a like number of Kudos from other uses. But having sensitive skin, I erred on the side of epithelial caution. However, after trying a Fatip, I can see where the results may be in the hands of the user; and that one must be mindful when selecting a blade: for me something far less than a Feather or Personal Med Prep is the place to begin--Astra SPP in the Fatip did a good job of cleaving my stubble, at least from my initial shaves. If I were to use an OC daily, I might prefer a more efficient blade.

Perhaps the Muhle is the more precisely made reasonably priced open comb when compared with the Fatip. But Joris may be the OC standout. My only OC experiences to date have been the Fatip and Gillette Old, short comb, razors.

The R41 is extremely efficient...and if you search the R41 thread along with this you will see lots of love...there re plenty of haters too...but for many it is just proper blade selection, along with use ZERO pressure and letting the tool do the job.
I have a coarse beard...BUT sensitive skin.....I use to get razor burn BAD.

The R41 works well for me because I can use less passes to get a great shave...on the average 2.5 passes for BBS. An Less passes for me means less irritation......if you go to the first post in this thread when i started BOTOC you will see that is why I started using OC in the first place....they simply worked better for my face.

A good and smooth that works well in the Fatip and R41 is the Gillette blacks...not the cheapest blade...BUT OMG...smooth...and sharp.

Good prep, and a good lather is essential, but don't fear the R41. My twin brother ( formerly Daniel Plainview...now goes by azarius) calls the R41 an onion peeler...but I dont think he gave it a chance, or used the right shave angle with the R41. It angle is MUCH different than other DE's ...But I find it very intuitive.

My two desert island razors are the Fatip and the R41...if all other razor were gone, i would be OK.... just don't take my AoS Sandalwood shave cream from me..I don't think coconut milk would make a good shaving cream! I dont want to end up looking like Moses on the island....!

I am a firm believer that not every razor is meant for every person. Although we are twins, we still have differences in beard patterns, technique, etc.

I gave the 2011 R41 a month...that should be more than enough time to evaluate a razor. Think about it, you only gave the 1912 two shaves before dismissing it

Considering how much I like the FaTip, but wishing for better quality, I know a Joris will be the razor I end up getting myself for my birthday present (if someone is nice, they may get one too).

The only DE's that I actually enjoy anymore are the FaTip, SC NEW, Single Ringle, the 1904 and the Tech. Everything else just collects dust.

I'd say any of the Mama Bear soaps.Great selection of scents and very easy to lather,be it face or bowl.

    +1

This is the best piece of advice when dealing with more "aggressive" razors (FaTips & R41). Blade selection becomes even more important on these razors because there is more exposure and more blade doing work.

Alex, I bought it from BullgooseShaving. Phil even took the time to email me and tell me he was too busy to get it sent out that day, but would have it shipped first thing in the morning. I ordered it Wednesday and received it in Connecticut Friday. He also took the time to pick up a pen and sign the invoice with a thank you. Nice personal touch. I got it for $66.00 with 2-day shipping. I look forward to doing business with Bullgoose again. Thanks again Phil.

Ken, I do like that Ikon handle a lot. I did/do have a little concern about the weight of the handle. So far the looks of the black resin outweigh my concerns. Thanks to Alex, if I do want to replace the handle I know which ones will fit. Are there any online sites out there where a DE man/woman can purchase a head from one manufacturer and a handle from another to make ONE complete razor?

I wish the makers of modern razors sold only the heads!! It would make our hobby less expensive!! But truth be told... Our don't have to be a handle of each head...you can by various handles and use them with various razor heads.

My twin brother had bought some of the Sabi razors and even Parkers becuase of the handles and have used them with his Razors.....maybe he will post a pic of his one when he reads this..... He has posted several pics in this thread and all over B&B, but it most cases cheaper to buy the Sabi or Parker than handle only!

There are a few companies like iKon, Weber, and Tradere that will sell the handles only. I picked up R41 on BST for $40 shipped....the B&B member that owned it used it for ONE shave. If you are looking to save some money, try BST before you go for the new option. I saved $20 plus shipping cost by doing so!

If you're a patient person I highly recommend ordering from Connaught Shaving in the UK. A R41 with shipping is $36.67 and a lot of their stuff is similarly low priced, it's the only place I order Tabac and MWF refills and they're where I got all 3 of my toothcomb Muhles (two R41's and a R101) it takes about 10-14 days to receive your package but I feel it's well worth the wait.

Phil is one of the few internet business owners that still have that Mom and Pop personal touch. He is well loved here at B&B for that one reason. Phil is such a wholehearted person.

Ok, I am very much on the same page as you regarding the R41. I love mine. In fact, I am wondering why I am sitting here typing this instead of getting in the shower and shaving. I love my R41, and use it with a Weber Bulldog handle daily with a feather blade. I similarly have tough hair and sensitive skin, and this is far easier to use than the Merkur HD I started with.

Now, I am still a bit of a newb in DE wet shaving. I am intrigued by the Joris/Fatip. You mentioned in an earlier post you mostly use your fatip, and the rest of the time you use your R41. Can you elaborate on the differences a little, and why you favor the fatip slightly over the R41.

Also, based on this thread, my impression is that I should go with the Joris instead of the Fatip. Can anyone speak to the differences in the quality that is mentioned a bit int his thread? Do the Joris heads have consistent lugs that work with the common aftermarket handles? Are they made from better materials? They do not appear to be solid stainless, but are plated. Is this correct? I am really on the cusp of pulling the trigger on a Joris with buffalo horn handle, just trying to get a little more info before I jump.

If you dont mind me jumping in on your question to Ken, the Joris is madein France by Vikim Diffusion of Plisson . Much been written over the decades about the craftsmanship of Joris razors. The Palladium (Spiraling Line pattern) version even better in that regard, everything is of exceptional quality, plating equivalent to the finest Edwin Jagger or iKon razors, and Joris's hand-crafted attention to design. It all comes together for one balanced, elegantrazor that will last a lifetime. Each Joris is expertly handcrafted and packed in exclusive wooden Joris brand box. They are made from Palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium form a group of elements referred to as the platinum group metal
