What's new

Brotherhood of the Open Comb

Im both a guitarist and a bassist; by current gig is playing bass in a metal band.

I am a little ashamed of the brand name, but I am currently loving the heck out of my new Squier Clissic Vibe 50's P-Bass. its a modern P-Bass body shape (out of pine) decked out like a fifties p-bass... single coil pickup, single ply blackguard pickguard and a tele style headstock.

I went out looking for a much more expensive instrument, but after playing several I ended up picking this little gem.

Don't be ashamed of the brand name - strut it with pride! My bass is actually a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz (£199 new!). Plays like a dream! I used to own a Musicman Stingray, and even though the sound was great I find the SVMJ MUCH nicer to play. I just HAD to tweak it, so I put a set of active EMG's, a Badass bridge and a torty scratchplate on it.

'Brotherhood Of Bassists'...I'm LIKING the sound of that! I borrowed a B-301 off a mate MANY years ago for a few gigs. Great bass, but the neck always seemed reeeeeeally long to me! Bloomin' heavy thing it was too!

The neck is longer than most other basses. It is set at the end of the body so it has almost no cut away. You gotta have LONG arms to play this one.

It is heavy. Not only that, it is VERY neck heavy (almost awkward). I find that I have to sit on a stool to be comfortable playing the Guild fretless. It is not one that I could use all night long or even to play more than a few songs a night with.

Now my 57 P bass is the lightest electric I have ever seen. I forget the weight but it is almost non existent. I can wear it all night long and not feel like a hunch back at the end of the gig.

+1 Started out bowl lathering as suggested last October trying to make that Uber-lather, but after one month after trying face lathering, i have not looked back! More cushion, economical, better feel and not destroying your brush as much!
However, YMMV, as always!

Tried the Astra SP for the second time in over 8 months in my Single Ring, just now. i have no idea how you guys use those blades! It was the same experience i had with them the last time; sharp enough, but too much irritation after the shave!
As always, YMMV, amazing!

I Love the Single ring.....I don't think they get enough love around B&B ...or even in BOTOC.....but...Astras SP for me...and YMMV...only do well in a few razors...and the Old isnt one of them.....The Supermax SP, Red Personna, Gillette Black and SI have all done well in the Single Ring for me...

Just received my two new Ikon handles from mailbox.
Very nice looking I think. Now I just need the two newly nickel plated heads to come in to go with them!

SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the word from Dave on the Heads??? I would drop him another email or PM....

I switched 100% to face-lathering over a year ago and haven't looked back. Lathering without a bowl or scuttle means there's one fewer piece of unnecessary, breakable paraphernalia in the bathroom, plus I'm getting faster, better, easier lathers. Since I've switched, I mostly use soaps instead of creams. They're more economical, are available in a larger variety, and produce a higher-quality lather with fewer artificial or synthetic ingredients.

I keep switching off Between both...BUT lately I've been more heavy handed toward face lathering.....

For me....and YMMV.....it's not about the name as it is quality instruments....I made the switch to Gibson and Fender Custom shop instruments and have never looked back....better tone woods...thin nitro lacquers...(not a fan of poly)....generally better pickups....and more of a vintage vibe.....

I have a buddy that has 20-30 guitars....and he always give me crap over "the cost" of custom shop guitars.....I just sit there and shake my head.....I would rather go quality over quantity...... for example...Gibson USA uses a weight relived body in production Les Pauls to reduce weight......something you would never see in a vintage LP.....custom shop uses a aged and hand selected boards for better tone and less weight....thicker maple caps instead of a thin veneer, etc....

now, that being said....I've played some pretty nice Squires, tokai les paul and tele copies, and even Mexican and Japanese Fenders that have been great playing and sounding instruments.....my first "real" guitar was 70's Univox Les Paul custom black beauty that I put Dimarzio Super Distortion pick ups in....way before we had all these boutique pick up winders!

now don't get me started over tube amps vs modeling amps!! LOL

While I do not play, I'm an audophile. I have a vast collection of LP's and a Strereo that is worth more than my truck.
On another note (PUN) I was wonering what we do. I work for Rockwell Collins, I'm an Avionics Tech.

Here is one of the benches I work (Weather Radar).

I get my vintage vibe by playing an actual vintage instrument! It's now 36 years old.

I'm not going to push Dave. When the heads come in, he will let me know and we will go from there. I am anxious, but can hold off a bit.

So far my attempts to procure a OC failed misearbly!! First the R41 bought from Connaught shaving got lost on it's way. I got the refund though. Secondly my purchase of a pair of Gillette new LC and SC from a member here seems to be in problem too as the USPS tracking is not updated since 11th :( .

I have the access to Gillette black and love the blade. Supermax super plat is another story though. I heard so much praise from you guys that I started to find them in my city, after a fruitless search I bought the blades from bestshave.net !! Just imagine buying a blade produced in my country from another country !! I've mailed the manufacturer several times asking them for their distributor/dealer name but got no response so far :( .

I can help if anybody is planning for a group order for Gillette black. Someone from US can buy large quantity - I can procure it from here and ship to that fellow. You all can later distribute the blades among yourself. Shipping from India to US is around $20 for weight upto 500gm (4-5 days delivery time).

BTW my current razor is Gillette slim adjustable @ 9 (first pass) and 7 (subsequent passes). The tech can't do justice to my coarse beard :( .

How crazy that you can't find the Supermax in your country!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck finding a OC!! let us know if any of us can help....I would be more than willing to ship to India....if you find a ebay or BST deal...and they wont ship to you....let me know....I can bid for u...and you pay me and I'll ship.....it sucks that in essence you would be paying shipping twice....but you could at least get a OC this way....

Not even a question. Tube wins every time.

...As far as lathering is concerned, I exclusively bowl lather... I just dont understand how to build a lather on my face. Do you guys have any links to videos showing how to face lather?

Go for the S3S Heads. He's now selling the seperately "

I do not care for the looks of the S3S heads at all. If I have open comb, I want it all the way. Not half and half.
I will wait for Dave to get me the nickel plated heads and see how that works for me. I sent him my two OC, one in short and one in long and want to trade in those for two of his already plated OC in new, also in short and long comb. I sent him complete razors with handles and told him I do not want handles back. He can have them as part of the trade in allowance. I will see how he does for me shortly. You never want to rush quality or it will become quantity instead.

This is how I do it

For creams:

WET BRUSH, invert and let excess water drip out
add a dime size or less of cream to center of brush
go in circular motions on face
dip tips only of brush if lather to dry in water, continue

For soaps:

shake out excess water...i even give a squeeze...
load brush with soap...I soften soap first with some warm water and pour off water
I load brush to soap is dry...
dip tips of brush in water
go in circular motions on face

For superlather:

same as for soaps, but add small amount of cream after water dip and before applying to face

I'm all face lathering these days. I did start out using a bowl/mug, but when I went on a short trip about a month in, and face lathered with a shave stick (Arko of course :), I was sold. I haven't used a bowl since. I also just rub the soap on my face, so I don't even load the brush in a bowl. In part it's a time saver, but mostly, I just like the feel of the lather building on my face. It does seem to get the hairs standing up, and well hydrated. I can actually shave pretty darn well with almost no prep at all as long as I face lather (not that I do that very often).

Ok guys...lets get your opinions.....I mix it up between face and bowl lathering...and 50/50.....but lately I just really seem to enjoy face lathering more....the lather seems thicker...more cushiony, and it seems to have better beard softening effects.

Any opinions out there??? I know Johnnie with his love of old cool vintage mugs must be more of a bowl/mug lather guy...but Im just really diggin the face lather...

I'm most a cream user...my favs are AoS Sandalwood and C.O Bigelow....I do use a superlather too at times...loading my brush first with either VDH or Arko before I add the cream....it's the only way I can get over the Arko scent! LOL

Face latherer here, this week so far it has been MWF, Tabac and now Cella, everyone of them face lathers really well.

For work I've worked for a number of large Software/Hardware firms, Ingres, Oracle, RSA, though mostly I work for myself as a contract PM. Currently working at Telstra.

I am currently one of the vast number of unemployed Americans. I have been in the HVAC industry for the majority of my life and have been Operations/General Manager for a 23 million dollar a year operation before cut backs in March...part of a $785 million dollar a year company. 10.5% EBITA as well as a 19.8% YoY growth wasn't good enough performance for our new executive team....
