Incidentally, today marks my 'one week anniversary' into Open Comb shaving! Not exactly ground-breaking news I know, but the shave I just had.....WOW!!! It's amazing what you can accomplish with a cheap brush, an Arko stick, a Derby and a 94 year-old Gillette Old. I don't shave on Sundays, so I was sporting a day and a half's growth. Thinking to myself 'this might take a bit of work' I'm sure I could hear the 'Old' chuckilng to itself as I started the first WTG stroke. Less than 10 minutes later I'm rinsed, sporting an effortless BBS (with no casualties) and ready to take on the week. I really can't think of a better start!

PS. This was after a 2 pass + a little buffing with my FaTip. I really liked it. I'd have to say it is just below my Weber, just above the R41. Of course, I think the LC NEW is still my favorite. I look like I have a little stubble, but am BBS. Guess the camera in the iPhone is a little off.

Hey mrchilli, I'm a bassist, too. My axe of choice is a 1976 Fender P-bass, blonde on blonde, with a pick-guard in the same tortoise-shell you have on your J-bass. Nice-looking bass, by the way.

Maybe we need a "Brotherhood of Bassists"

I've been playing bass since the early 60's. Electric and concert upright. I have a nice late 19th century German upright. 2 Fenders: 1957 P with a 1966 Jazz neck (you don't want to know how I broke the original neck but now the P is kept in a road case unless it is on me). 1974 Jazz. 1978 Guild B-301 fretless. Love the fretless.

Im both a guitarist and a bassist; by current gig is playing bass in a metal band.

I am a little ashamed of the brand name, but I am currently loving the heck out of my new Squier Clissic Vibe 50's P-Bass. its a modern P-Bass body shape (out of pine) decked out like a fifties p-bass... single coil pickup, single ply blackguard pickguard and a tele style headstock.

I went out looking for a much more expensive instrument, but after playing several I ended up picking this little gem.

I think BOTOC is filled with members of B.O.B too!! My brother is a bassist an keyboardist...my favorite bass he ever had was a 80's Kramer 8 string with a aluminun neck.... That was awesome...he also had a Gibson RD that was pretty cool.....

Me..... i've always been Les Paul and Vintage Marshall kind of guy.... Even though in the last few years Ive added some Tele's and Strats in the mix... And even added a vintage black face fender bassman into the amp mix....

So in thinking the BOTOC BBQ should have a jam session too!!

We need a BIG yard...... Johnnie.... I think your yard might be big enough........ Just hide Ralph..... Since Arley has become a LOSER he keeps threatening to cook Ralph in curried goat!!

I have the access to Gillette black and love the blade. Supermax super plat is another story though. I heard so much praise from you guys that I started to find them in my city, after a fruitless search I bought the blades from bestshave.net !! Just imagine buying a blade produced in my country from another country !! I've mailed the manufacturer several times asking them for their distributor/dealer name but got no response so far :( .

I can help if anybody is planning for a group order for Gillette black. Someone from US can buy large quantity - I can procure it from here and ship to that fellow. You all can later distribute the blades among yourself. Shipping from India to US is around $20 for weight upto 500gm (4-5 days delivery time).

BTW my current razor is Gillette slim adjustable @ 9 (first pass) and 7 (subsequent passes). The tech can't do justice to my coarse beard :( .
Well, then you have to change your name to Slim.Addict not Tech.addict

I forgot... I have a very early 60's Dan Electro short horn 6 string bass too (copper body with white vinyl around the outside)... How could I forget the old lipstick pickup Danny boy... Getting old and feeble minded I guess.

Don't have a pic of it but it is identical to this one that is online

    Lightbulb Lathering

Ok guys...lets get your opinions.....I mix it up between face and bowl lathering...and 50/50.....but lately I just really seem to enjoy face lathering more....the lather seems thicker...more cushiony, and it seems to have better beard softening effects.

Any opinions out there??? I know Johnnie with his love of old cool vintage mugs must be more of a bowl/mug lather guy...but Im just really diggin the face lather...

I'm most a cream user...my favs are AoS Sandalwood and C.O Bigelow....I do use a superlather too at times...loading my brush first with either VDH or Arko before I add the cream....it's the only way I can get over the Arko scent! LOL

I am pretty much on same wave length with you Ken. I enjoy both, but have been doing a lot of face lathering. It seems to be much thicker and gives me a smoother shave when I face lather. I do not use hard soaps, just the AOS creams and Cella and all give me great results face lathering.

I mostly use a cheap scuttle to keep my brush warm between passes but building the lather on your face is good for exfoliating, softening the skin, and lifting them whiskers up for a proper shave. However, it's always nice whipping up a huge lather in a mug.

Lately I have been trying to settle on a shave stick so I have been exclusively face lathering for the past two week (or more)......

I've even used a few creams in tubes and face lathered with them in order to stay in the face lathering grove but give myself a break from trying to decide which stick I want to take traveling with me.

To face lather cream take it from the tube onto your finger then onto your face. Have at it with your brush just like you would with a shave stick. Try it. Works great.

Just received my two new Ikon handles from mailbox.
Very nice looking I think. Now I just need the two newly nickel plated heads to come in to go with them!

I switched 100% to face-lathering over a year ago and haven't looked back. Lathering without a bowl or scuttle means there's one fewer piece of unnecessary, breakable paraphernalia in the bathroom, plus I'm getting faster, better, easier lathers. Since I've switched, I mostly use soaps instead of creams. They're more economical, are available in a larger variety, and produce a higher-quality lather with fewer artificial or synthetic ingredients.
