Last time I used an electric was about 18 years ago. I had a small Braun that I kept in the glove compartment of my car. If I were really rushed, I would shave at stoplights on my way to work.

Even when I owned it I probably only used it about once a month, at the most.

The whole idea of an electric razor is disheartening to me. I love to wet shave, and if there were no DEs in the world I would choose carts over electrics all day every day.

[QUOTE=turtle;4077193]I've used electrics over the years that were well meaning gifts from family members. None of them impressed me to the point that I would continue. Always been a DE shaver.

With the occasional excursion with two blade cartridges, that is my story as well. I think that I have a fairly normal beard with normal skin but the discomfort from electrics made me think that the razor was pounding the stubble back in rather than cutting them off.

I thought it was just fine when I was in my mid-teens, and that was the only way I knew how to shave.

This sums it up pretty well.

I used one for years and enjoyed it quite well. I had a few spots on my neck that were inevitable for irritation. Had to be really cautious. I don't have this with straights now. However, a DE did cause me irritation.

I knew I was definitely in the minority here when I posted the question so I'm not surprised that most of the replies have giving electric shavers the thumbs down. Something I've noticed since not using a blade razor anymore is that the shafts of the hairs are no longer visible underneath my skin. I've seen others post about having a shadow or something along that, on their face even though they just achieved a BBS shave. My beard is pitch black with some sprinkles of gray and my skin is on the fair side, unless I soak up a lot of the Texas sun in the summer. It was frustrating to spend the time on a traditional shave, getting a nice smooth face and still looking like I needed to go do another pass or two with the razor. Maybe my skin has become a little thicker (no pun intended) since blade shaving takes a thin layer of epidermis with each shave. I'm not sure the reason but it's nice to look cleaned shaving after shaving now.

whenever I shave with an electric I DO get that shadow even same places are bbs, I donīt get that with traditional shave. And with the electric razors I always miss two places in my neck area, dont know why

Like so many other things in life, shaving is most definitely a YMMV thing. I can see this in how my parents, who are both in their seventy's drink coffee. My dad has to have Eight o' Clock coffee brewed while my mom likes Folgers Instant. She drinks her coffee while doing things about the house and my dad has his while watching the morning news. Both are happy and find no fault with the others choice of Joe.

I have very sensitive skin, in fact, if I scrap away on my face in certain areas I get an outbreak of psoriasis/eczema (drs disagreed on diagnosis. I keep a goatee in order to keep from irritating sensitive areas). My dad used to use whatever he could find...cheap bics, etc. I would be in pain. I tried a variety of DE razors...grew up with a safety razor. Dad got me a cheap norelco....tore up my face. So I found out about the Panasonic wet/dry razors a number of years ago, and have not looked back. I get a pretty close shave, depends on how often I replace blades which are not cheap. But the shave is quite comfortable and close. Never had anything closer, even with a blade. Right now I use a Panasonic 8109 and it is a good razor. I am interested in wet shaving, but NOT in walking around with skin flaking off my mug. The panasonics are good razors, but expensive. Blades can be $40

I use my Norelco on an quickie emergency face shave and head shave, the shave is quite good for a electric.

I've had a couple and they worked pretty well other than on my neck. I just prefer the slower pace wetshaving allows me.

I am considering giving my Panasonic WET/DRY shaver a go with proper prep just out of curiousity. I has been gathering dust since I discovered traditional shaving half a year ago.

I wonder what it would do with a proper lather or just proraso pre-shave. So far I have only used it dry or with mediocre shaving oil and canned goo.

Has anyone over here ever tried a wet electric with properly whipped lather?

I have to agree with a previous poster that it seems my Panasonic works best dry, but I too am interested in a pre shave/lather that might work well. Again, I have to be careful with soaps on my face.

I did not prefer it dry, if I shave dry with an electric, it will get too warm as my shave is relatively long and leaves my skin feeling too dry.

I have a cheap Norelco rotary that I use strictly for trimming up the back of my neck between haircuts. I don't get any irritation, but I keep it moving quickly with little pressure. It works well and I'm glad to have it. I've always had an electric to use for this and this latest one is the best I've had. I think they've gotten better and better over the years.

Im glad i own one because it comes in handy from time to time, but i would never shave my face with it. Its just too irritating. I cant think of why i bought it in the first place, but i use it to trim around my neck and sometimes get the odd whisker or two that my DE missed in the midst of a hurried frenzy.

    I tried it this morning:

After showering I applied Proraso preshave (old formula) on my wet face, I used a bit more than I would usually have done for preshave and my face was wetter aswell. I allowed it to work for a minute or two and picked up my Panasonic wet/dry shaver. I rinsed it with cold water and started shaving. One pass without rinsing the razor between moves.

I must admit it was quite a decent and refreshing shave in very little time. A very nice CCS with zero irritation.

Definitely not a substitute for a DE but a nice option when there is little time and I don't want to skip the shave.

My history is that I gave up DE shaving, went to Remington foil shavers which I disliked, then settled on Philips double action rotary shavers which I used for decades, and still use. They gave me a decent enough shave - meaning I had to shave every 24 or so hours - whereas with close DE shaves I get to that same stage after 32 or so hours.

I got a lot of razor rash for a decade and a half until I discovered the secret of rotary shaving, which was to wash my face with any soap that dried my face out - Johnson&Johnson Clean & Clear soap bars, Sapoderm or any other medicated anti-acne type soap. After my face dried, rotary shaving was a breeze. And the life of my cutters extended from 6 months to over three years. At the three year mark, the cutters still weren't irritating me, they were just too slow and numerous passes were required for a close shave.

For those that say that foil shavers are definitely better than rotaries, I note that Remington eventually had to follow suit and put out rotaries similar to Philips.
    Regards,
    Renato
