Thanks all, now its time to hunt down all the extras that go with wet shaving. Wish me luck!

Welcome abeard! This forum is definitely full of quality information. When I started, the first thing I did was to go through the sticky posts at the top of this forum. That helped a lot. Another tip, patience is the key. Take your time to scale the learning curve!

    Update:

I have been furiously researching and reading about all the little in's and out's that I will need to start wet shaving. Got up this morning, shaved in the shower with my regular cartridge (don't throw any rocks yet) and what do I find on my door step a few hours later? The Edwin Jagger I ordered. So.....now I have my implement but I was seriously lacking in the accouterments for shaving.

Off to the local Fred Meyers and Rite Aid I go. Here is what I picked up:

    - Nivea Pre-Shave face scrub
    - Neutrogena Post-Shave lotion
    - Old Spice Original (Gf gave me a crazy grin when she smelled it, I think she approves :) )
    - Edwin Jagger DE89
    - Eternity by Calvin Klein after shave lotion (this was my usual post shave lotion, doesn't leave any residue and not over powering aroma)
    - American Crew shave lotion (this was actually what I would shave with, no soap or gel's just the lotion, worked surprisingly well)
    - Styptic Pen
    - Van Der Hagen shave set (yes I know cheap but no stores around me had anything else in stock, so I will use this until I find out what I truly want...)
    - A brass cup and toothbrush holder set from Fred Meyers (I figure I can use this to hold my razor and use the cup to clean the razor post shave)
    - A ceramic cup (using this to sit the brush in to absorb water)

Since I had nothing ready for a good wet shave and I want to get started as soon as possible I am making due. Regarding the Van Der Hagen shave set.....I saw a post about a suribachi bowl and it is very interesting. A good friend of mine is quite the artist and he said he would be more than happy to make me a bowl for me with spec's like the suribachi but modified how I would like it. The boar brush is being cleaned and worked in right now by following the direction's in the wiki found on the forums. The soap....well I don't know if it's good or bad, but it will have to do.

Here are a few more pics:

    The lotion's, fragrance's, etc etc

    Main implement

    accessory implements

    Brush, bowl and soap

What my set up is like for the moment

Obligatory lather pic of brush being broken in

So for now I will be using anything I can find local until I figure out what I would like.
    - Looking hard for a travel tech so I can make my own handle
    - When I get back on the lathe I will be making my own handle for a brush along with a bowl. We have beautiful hardwoods around here and I am looking forward to it.
    - Looking for a true razor set to hold my brush and razor
    - Start sampling fragrances, lotions, soaps, pre/post shaving lotions, etc
    - I am itching to see if I can make my own fragrances
    - Get a true 'best' badger brush since the one I have is boar, I would like to try both kinds and maybe even a horse hair in the future.
    - Having my friend who is making me a suribachi also make me a scuttle

That's all for now, I am really looking forward to shaving with the DE and getting into the ritual of wet shaving (getting excited to start looking at straight razors too!) I was very surprised at how small the EJ razor was.

Quick question, after I get done shaving, do I rise out the bowl and rinse off my puck? Or leave it alone for the time being?

Well goodnight from a newbie wet shaver making due with the things around him. Wish me luck and any and all tips, tricks, and directions are very much appreciated.

Next time you are in Rite Aide, pick up a tube of The Real Shaving Company shave cream. Face lather that with your boar brush. I think you will be pleased.

First D.E shave today. Very smooth, very nice. I had quite a few little spots on my neck but I think that is because my skin is not use to the super sharp close shave. I did take a good size nick out of my upper lip but other wise I am very impressed and excited to keep going. The cheapo boar brush actually did very well making a good lather and coating my face. I got a few smiles from the RN's I pick up patients from after splashing on the Old Spice.

The brush is coming apart with every lather so getting another one is priority (I think I will look for a good boar brush before I move to badger) I would also like to get a razor sample pack so I can find the one that works for me. Sample fragrances will be next up. Shaving soaps and creams I still need to research more.

Artistik: I did not see any in my local Rite Aide but I will check others. Thank you everyone for all the direction, and any more is greatly appreciated.

    Luke,

You may want to get a badger brush as boar take a bit to break in. I have seen some creams at our local freddies, Kiss My Face and Alba. Both around $8, but the size to value is grand, mine lasted just over a year!

gorgehiker: The brush did very very well I would say for making and applying lather. I used the break in method posted in the brush forum twice. The brush is just cheaply made so it's 'de-hairing' every time I use it. I will have to look for Kiss My Face and Alba, I like having a stock of good shaving creams to try out. Thanks for the info!

B&B has been a lifesaver. The 'green box' brush, soap and bowl were out of necessity. I am still researching and figuring out what exactly I want. I do have a local buddy of mine who does pottery work. I have convinced him to make me a shuttle and a suribachi bowl :)

Now I just need to laminate some hardwoods together and stick them on the lathe. Custom hardwood bowl and brush handle is what I am going for.

Welcome aboard the good ship B&B. Take a stroll on the promenade deck and enjoy the voyage.
