    Default Shaving Shops in NYC?

I'm going to be in Manhattan in the near future and I plan to visit Cambridge Chemists -without SWMBO!

I don't think they carry Musgo or Proraso products. Anyone know of any place that does? Also, is there a Floris retailer?

    Thanks!

Pasteur's Pharmacy is pretty close at Lex and 61st. They have Musgo, Proraso, Taylor, Trumper, Harris, T&H, and lots more at excellent prices.

Yep, as Jay pointed out, your best bet for Musgo is Pastuer. They have most of the line. Also keep in mind that much (but not all) of the stuff that Cambridge has, Pastuer has for cheaper. As a rule, their prices are on par with the cheapest mail order places.

Oh, and feel free to open the tubs to check that they are not dehydrated and for the scent. I have it on good authority that this is appropriate, even though I have been scolded for it there.

Listen to Moses*. When I go to the fishmonger, I sniff and poke incessantly, and they respect me for it. If I didn't pop a few tops at Pasteur's, I wouldn't have scored all the good tubs of Coates.

I will third Pasteur. Their prices are much, much better than any other place in NYC that I've found.

There are also several Art of Shaving stores. In my opinion, they're a rip off, but the design of the stores is creative and they can be fun to browse through.

What's great about NYC is that a lot of the smaller pharmacies (I.E. not Duane Reade) carry fancy shaving soaps and creams. For instance, I was bored one afternoon and went into a place somewhere in the high 70's or low 80's and Lexington Ave and found a bunch of DR Harris products.

Yep. That was probably Lascoff Apothecary at 82nd and Lex. Kind of a neat little place, that dates back to 1899.

I was just there this past weekend, and I definitely recommend the store on 62nd/Lex over the one on 34th between Park and Madison, as they seemed to have a larger selection. Enjoy!

In May 2006 I was in heaven at Papaya King on 3rd and 86th. (On a Thursday no less.) I was so close. But by the same token, I had yet to be reformed, by the many fine members of B&B. That unfortunately, was still months away.

So I'm afraid knowing about the 3T's and Tabac, would have been lost on me. After all I had foam in a can. (little did I know...)

As far as products go, Lascoff - if that is indeed the place I went to - is not that great. If I remember correctly, they have far more products oriented towards women than ultra manly shaving stuff. It's a place, though and definitely looks like it has some history to it.

    +1 on 62nd and Lexington over E 34th, too.

Also, a little further south on lex is Eisler (maybe Eisley) chemists (I think it is at 78/79 and Lex). They carry a wide array of brushes and quite a few brands of creams and soaps. If my memory serves me right, they often stock Floris products as well.

Indeed. I went in there because of the big Floris sign in the window. I did find a lot of interesting things. But on the Floris end I was disappointed. I found various products for the home, but no Floris shaving supplies.

I just stopped by. They had Floris colgne and aftershave balm. No creams unfortunately. I did pick up some Santal cologne though and LOVE it.

They also carry L'Occitane, I think. (Although, there are plenty of L'Occitane stores in NYC). And some other good stuff. But NOT CHEAP.

Pasteur also carries this (to my surprise), though not with the "rest" of the shaving items. It was near the counter. It was quite reasonably priced, a few dollars less than their retail stores.

    Best.

Indeed. I had kind of forgotten that. They do have much, but not by any means all, of the L'Occitane line.

Pasteur actually carries brushes and razors. I saw the slant one time. The slant!

The next interview should be with the owner of Pasteur.
