    Default deodorant question

I have an apparently odd deodorant issue. If use anything that doesn't have alcohol as the first ingredient, I break out immediately (within a day or two). My whole life I have used either old spice original, brut or chaps, as they all have SD alcohol as the number one ingredient.

Anyone know of others that might exist with similar ingredients? Also, anyone else have or ever hear of a condition like mine? BTW, my dad seems to have it as well, which is how I learned early on about the alcohol trick!

Antiperspirants do that to me. I have heard quite a few people have allergies to deodorants and antiperspirants, so no I don't think your alone.

You might want to check the Mennen Speed Stick deodorants. I have used them as well as the Old Spice deodorants since I was a teenager and they don't bother me.

The other day I bought some Speed Stick Musk deodorant as I remembered using it alot along with the original growing up. Odd thing is, it made my armpits itch like crazy. Thinking it might of been a one off thing, I tried it again the next day and the same thing happened. No idea what's going on unless they reformulated as it never bothered me at all growing up. The only way I can use Speed Stick now is if I use their Antiperspirants. You'd think they would bother me more than deodorants, but it's not the case.

Same goes for any deodorants from Right Guard....itchy itchy itchy!!!

Actually, I can't wear antiperspirants at all. I used to wear speed stick as a teen, but can't wear it anymore. I think alcohol is the first ingredient in that as well, but it doesn't like me either!

A lot of antiperspirants have some type of metal in them to clog your sweat glands. My guess would be that you are sensitive to the metal or some other common ingredient. Luckily, it's easy enough to avoid the ingredients your armpit doesn't like, and it's common enough that it's written on the back of every stick to discontinue if irritation occurs.

I've never looked at the alcohol thing. Reminds me of an AS for your pits.

Another option would be some type of razor burn if you shave them...

Have you tried alum block? It may take your body a few days to adjust, but it makes a good deo.

edit: alternatively, Lafe's Naturals makes a (pump) spray on version (alum solution with other goodies like aloe) that is very effective as well.

It's definitely a great alternative. I use my deodorant crystal alot, just not all the time because I like variety. Especially good when you don't want your AS or Cologne to clash with your deodorant.

funny after not using it for months I just put on some Tom's of Maine deodorant tonight after my long overdue shower that i never wanted to end, i wish this was a hotel so i could just be up in there for an hour. but this company has an antiperspirant stick that contains alcohol, they have other sticks like their original care that don't contain alcohol as well.

Speed stick destroyed me. It itched like crazy all day long.

Old Spice has been a good friend, and I just tried the Dove Men Care. Both seem to work well, and I really like the Dove. Plus it seems to wash out nicely, unlike some other brands that seem to stick in the hair.

I've had similar problems and have been using the Dove Men's Care with good results as well.

I am going to try the Dove Mens Care, I used their shower soap and liked it. I am also going to look at Toms of main. I have looked at Jason as well in the past but never used it. I will investigate the alum as well. Thanks for all the suggestions and stay tuned for updates!

FWIW, you may want to skip Tom's of Maine... whatever is in it (base formula, not fragrance related) turns my pits into burning napalm after just 2 or 3 uses. IIRC, others around here have mentioned a similar reaction/problem.

Fair enough, I will put that lower on the list. Thanks!

One more thought... if you go the alum block route (which I recommend), just be sure to use shaving alum (ie: potassium alum). The store bought "crystal deo" (and others) are often ammonium alum which is manufactured and less expensive. The use and effect is the same, however, ammonium alum can be irritating to some folks. That said, some store brands are indeed potassium alum; just check your labels. Also, as I suggested above, Lafe's products (except the gel stick) are great and are all potassium alum. The gel stick leaves yah, well, sticky.

Another +1 on the Alum block recommendation. No chemicals, no preservatives, no smell, no slimy residue, no stained t-shirts, and a $1 block will last you a year.

Only downside is that it is not an anti-persperant. You will sweat, but it won't have any smell.

    At all.
