    Default JNAT touch ups

Question on how to retouch up a JNAT finished razor.

So I have a razor I finished on my JNAT that I have used almost daily that is starting to need a touch up. Question is do I just go back to the JNAT with slurry and dilute to plain water or do I go to just water? I would think there is no need to go any further back into the progression.

    Thanks all.

I would try just some x strokes on water to begin with and see if that gets you to where you want. If not then go through the slurry and dilutions.

Only one way to test... :P

I'm in the process of figuring out the same. I touched up a razor (previously honed on a JNAT) today on just water, so we'll see how the shave goes tomorrow. If it needs more, I'll go through light slurry.

For touch ups, I use very light slurry with tomonagura and hone until slurry breaks down/dry, then dilute to water. Wash off the stone and blade and finish with just water. No stropping afterwards.

For me, this seems to work really well. Its the same system that I use with my coticules for touch ups as well (minus the slurry breakdown/dry part).

    Hi Doc,
For me, I have to go back to a slurry for an effective touch-up. The jnat in like to use doesn't respond well to just water.

    Each is different of course.

I'll try just water to see if it works, if not I'll do a light slurry. I was just wondering. I know they are very different from coticules where water only can work.

That's the answer. Test it as many ways as you can; learn you own stone.

i recently tried this and either i didn't do enough x strokes on water alone, but the slurry and the circles i used felt nicer.. on a nakayama kiita for reference.

Tomonagura to water will do the trick.

I just touched it up on a light tomonagura slurry diluted to water. HHT right where it was when I got fantastic shaves. Will try to shave with it tomorrow morning.

Well, here are my results. I did 2 sets of 10 half strokes on plain water followed by 20 x strokes. The blade was definitely a little bit harsher than the last time, and not as sharp. Perhaps my stone just doesn't work with plain water.

Ill try it again starting with light slurry and see where that gets me.

Check out the post above yours, try that way, it should work fine.

Guys, I sometimes find that I'm getting negative results going from mejiro to tomo, and that it is sharper after mejiro. Any advice on why tomo might be dulling my edge?

how much do you work the slurry? I can't think of any other reason other than than the tomonagura slurry is not worked well enough or the slurry messes up the edge.
Have you tried with less slurry or only water?

Well, I went back and tried using some tomonagura slurry. It was relatively light. Did half strokes (in a series: 10, 5, 4, 3, 2), then 10 x strokes, diluted and repeated. Now I've got a nice smooth shaver again! :)

I have tried heavier tomo, but I usually use light, watery. Regardless, it always seems to give negative results... but if I got from mejiro straight to water, I do seem to get some refinement over the mejiro.

It is really a thing of beauty when one finally finds out what works with their individual stone specially a finishing stone!

For touch ups - I have been going to light Mejiro slurry, followed by light Koma, then light Tomo slurry... then maybe 5-10 laps on water.
Works well - but I am still working with this... I may wind up refining it more. But I do find that dropping to Mejiro slurry has been the key.

This is exactly what I do, as well, Gamma... except that I dont have a Koma, so I skip to Tomo, or water... but I like to start the touch-up on Mejiro.
