Just wanted to stop by real quick and say hello. I am new to straight razor shaving, currently looking to buy my first one. This forum has been very helpful and I look forward to being a member of this great sight![]()

Welcome! Straight to straight razor or have you used a double edge?
Thank you all for the welcomes. @n3gkiwi, I haven't used a double edged in a long time. I didn't really care for it much. Jumping right to the straight razor.
~~~no foolin around huh?
Several ways you can go from here. Buying a kit for about $50 from whipped dog is quite popular. that gets you a vintage straight shave ready, an econo leather strop, two balsa slats, one loaded with iron oxide, the other with green chromium oxide (cheater boards, for touch ups). Or you can buy new from one of the preferred vendors (Jarrod at thesuperiorshave is highly recommended). Another option is to buy vintage and lightly new/used shave ready straights from members here through the BST forum or through other forums, & I'm vaguely familiar with SRP yet some of the members here that you could buy shave ready used straights from offer for sale there to
usually, the used straights that are for sale (in the forums) are of good value and fairly priced. The main problem as I see it buying straights from BST are, being in the right spot at the right time. Quality straights at frugal prices don't last long yet if you have the time to hang out and watch to see what comes up, you could score well. I've seen some really nice straights go for uber cheap thru our BST...& 9 X's out of 10, the sellers list if they are shave ready or not
that said, there are straight razor users that will hone for free, only looking for feedback on the edge they did for you. some of the guys will get a new hone and want some different blades to see how it does. Or they just like to hone and aren't into it to make a buck...you only pay shipping each way. that could be a way for you to go if you find a razor that needs hone work
When i started w/straights a year ago, I bought a new razor first time around, and a coticule hone to keep the edge up. Since then I've picked up on other hones (nearly all coticule) and bought a bunch of used razors from ebay, just to get my feet wet and see what it's all about
Whichever way you go, have fun with it
Jake
Even though you're from that state up north, I think our mutual love for wet shaving can bridge that gap. Welcome to B&B Red!
Welcome aboard the B & B (besides being enrolled in the fictional, sacred and utopian Order of Shavedom). Please feel free to come up to the promenade / sun deck & 'sit-a-spell'.
Sounds like your off to a great start and yes, this Forum has the knowledge, ideas, and all around 'know-how' to assist in your Wet-Shaving experience. In a nut-shell...your 'gonna' love it here.
Q. What brand of tools (blades, soap, brush ect...), are you working with?
In my opinon, it's wise and sage advice to get a Razor Blade Sampler so that you'll see what blade would be a good fit (mild, moderate & aggressive, ect...), for your face and Razor plus the Thread entitled Wet Shaving Instructions & Tutorials maybe of great interest to you and is very informative.
Although, you may not be additted yet (I think I'm holding up fairly well...with a few exceptions), because we all suffer (gladly and are doomed perhaps), from this shaving complusion (and other Acquisition Disorders), because at times..."Resistance is futile".![]()
Please don't forget once you get time....to tell us a little about yourself in the Hall of Fame sub-forum.
