input on pomade selection

Hi everyone,

i haven't visited the site in a while but was hoping to get some of the excellent advice available here.

When looking for a place selling Pinaud Clubman in Europe, i found it with a guy specializing in hair pomades.
Pomade-shop.eu i believe, he really has a lot.

Now i'm thinking of ordering some of the stuff besides the AS, and was wondering what your ideas were on them:

Murray's nu nile
Dax Super neat (water based i believe)
Murray's exelento

If you're in europe, why not use black and white? Or Mr. Ducktails? Or from what I gather, the brylcreem thats sold in the EU is actually the original formula, so it offers a way better hold than the brylcreem here state side. Out of the products you mentioned, I would go with the dax. Although, I have gotten away from using petroleum bases pomades, in favor or layrite, suavecito, grant's... Hope this could help.

First of all, thanks a lot for your reply!
I'm a bit hesitant about the petroleum based stuff myself, but i haven't found a good "reworkable" gel, so i figured i 'd give it a try.
Do you think i'd better get the dax and possibly a tub of layrite? the thing that put me of it is the price...

When it comes to buying local, i'm a bit spoiled for choice with that webshop but i haven't seen it locally anywhere.
The nearest option is in Antwerp, and the fuel would cost me more than the shipping costs buying it online, they've really gone mad here... (7,5$/gallon if my maths are right)

Water based pomades do dry out, but they are still reworkable. All you have to do is wet your comb and it reactivates the pomade and also gives it extra shine. My personal favorite is Suavecito pomade. It's the exact same as layrite, but its cheaper.

+1 on the DAX
I used to use Brylcreem, but I have now switched to DAX short and neat. Great stuff, nice hold and shine. if I need to reshape, I just run the comb under the tap and am good to go.

Plus 1 again on Dax. I use the Dax Red for hold and Dax Super Neat for shine. Keeps my hair neatly parted and back all day.

I just use Suave. Give me some of that cheap stuff. It does the job and for only $2.34, compare to Axe for $6.99 or American Crew for $15.99.

Just got in to pomades. I've tried the Axe, Suave Pomade, Groom & Clean, Layrite, Suavacito, and Grant's Special Edition Wax Pomade.

I have thin hair, and have a pomp cut, but pretty much sport the business part most of the time. Axe isn't bad for the money, but if it's a quality slick you're looking for, it doesn't cut it. Good smell on the Axe though. Suave is the same. People say it's cheap, but it's a really small "tin" of pomade. The Groom & Clean is a different beast. Strong, medicinal smell, and not that great of a hold. Good sheen though. I also hear this washes out petroleum based stuff pretty good.

Suavacito is a great price for a really good pomade. It goes in smooth, combs smooth, and smells great. It gets fairly hard though and gives me a bit of trouble on any re-combs. Gran'ts SE Wax is thick. It's hard to get it in your hair...even balls up into clumps if you're not careful. Great hold, but not the best product for thin hair. I'm gonna try it in smaller doses this summer, as I read it's good for warmer weather. Layrite is my favorite. Expensive, but damn smooth. Combs in great, holds good without being heavy or too hard. With water, re-combs very well, and smells good.

His reviews are quite colorful and informative. Almost worth a read even if you aren't interested in pomades.

Just went and got my haircut. Barber recommended Sauvecito and I have to say I am very pleased with the results. Still only one day but I did by a tub from them so hopefully it'll work as well upon future uses. Plus its a locally based company to where I live so thats always a plus.

I don't use pomade much now, I switched to a moldable clay (hair is thinning quickly), but I used to use royal crown and 3 flowers brilliantine when I was using it. Royal crown is a classic, if not a bit greasy. 3 flowers I remember being a bit heavier though it had a good scent.

I am a purist and use petrol based stuff only. IMO it's the only way to really get the shine right. It certainly is a pain though. I use Royal Crown myself.

Are you using the crown pomade or hair dressing? All I can ever find is the hair dressing. If I could get my hands on the pomade, I would use it. Although, I haven't seen the pomade on the shelves since the early 90s.

I got the pomade here. The pomade has much better hold than the hair dressing. Better scent also imo.

When I use pomade, I use Lucky 13. Usually it's the Devil's Deluxe (Medium strength), but when my hair gets long or I want extra control, I'll use the Tru-hold version. I have very thick, unruly hair, so to get everything to lay down I need something this strong.
