Your lather should look like a meringue or cream on top of a pie - thick and white (without a lot of bubbles or too airy). I've found that if I use a soap that isn't a shaving soap, it looks great for the first pass., but it will loose it substance before the second pass. I hope this helps.

Then I need something else. How thick do I put it on?

Proraso is another bang for the buck soap.
As to how thick do you apply? I tend to go like I'm glazing a cinnamon bun with Arko, and kinda "just thick-ly-ish" with other soaps.

If anyone is interested, check out soapshed.com. Not everything he makes is on the site, and, if you prefer tallow, call. It's pretty cheap to try at $7 each.

Also, picked up a new VDH women's soap at WM. Wife is going to try it tonight. I'll post her feedback soon.
SPRUCE PINE, NC...I love WNC! I'm in Greenville SC and enjoy driving up to Asheville. You're not to far from Black Mountain...there is an amazing cafe out that way--Morning Glory. I'll have to swing up that way a grab me a bar!

Let me know when you'll be this way. A cup of coffee or (if you prefer) a Spruce Pine made beer. They use some in a few of their soaps. I'm in Spartanburg quite a bit, but always with work.
