    Default My First Restore

A couple weeks ago I bought a Dubl Duck from an antique store. Below are the original pictures.

After further inspection I noticed a crack in the scales near the pivot pin. When removing the scales, they snapped completey though. There were several deep spots of pitting on the blade and following recommendations here I began the progression of sandpaper from 150 to 12000 (found at hobby lobby). I wasn't able to remove many of the pits but wasn't sure if I should go lower in grit due to the thinness of the blade (thoughts, ideas?). It is very smooth to the touch now, but they are still visible.

Now I need to put together some scales. I'm leaning towards doing these in a zebrawood but will probably spend some time at the local wood store checking out different options.

*Please ignore the camera and finger reflections...there is only so much I can do with a smartphone.

More pictures to follow as it progresses. Go easy on me, it's my first attempt.

Very nice job on the blade. I never bother getting all the pitting out. I like the way it looks makes it look more vintage but still nice and shiny. can't wait to see the scales.

That's excellent job for the first restore.
Personally I will go with greaselles compounds rather than low grit sandpaper but that's something you can try next time.

Thanks guys. I don't know anything about rebluing so will probably get this one up and working with some nice scales. For the next one I think I'm going to try the dremel with the different compounds as sanding this by hand was extremely time consuming. Is the best place to find ones to restore ebay, or do you have luck with garage sales, etc? It seems to me the antique stores want to overprice their items.
