As awa54 pointed out, the lilac is a large bush and not a bulb-forming plant, so it wasn't lilacs you were smelling. It may not even have been the bulbs. Does your wife by any chance use a fresh organic compost mixture in the pot?

(Actually, to be honest, I really like the Veg.)
