Amazing - i did not know that - i think i have a p-38 from my army days (66-69). I need to find it. Some things i'll never forget like my serial number before they started using SSNs (i think they do now). P-38 - ahhhh the memories...

A good shoe horn. I wish I had my grandfathers.

While on vacation to London I visited Truefitt and Hills shop and saw shoe horns made of real horn. I was shocked by the prices, but thought how such an item could be an heirloom passed from generation to generation, and wished I could own one.

I'd be interested to know how much we're talking about. You can get a really nice one here for $20!
I've got a handmade Yak-horn comb which cost me 50 yuan, $7.50. Very nice and should last a lifetime.

I second the binoculars suggestion. The RSPB HDs were 500 GBP about 4 years ago and 90% as good as the Leicas at 1,300.

Military brushes. I inherited a 30 year old Kent brush that still looks and works great.

The shoehorns in London were 70 to 100+ GBP each.

    My goodness!
I'll take a snap of my comb so you can see if there's any difference in quality.
    Will post later

I love the look of those radios, very nice.

A Leatherman - http://www.leatherman.com/ my boss had his stolen years ago and always mentions he still wishes he had it to hand

Classical, acoustic or electric guitar - Not something I use everyday but well known brands can hold their value pretty well, have known of people buying limited editions and some made with rare woods that have risen in value.

Ettinger Wallets - been meaning to treat myself to one of these handmade wallets, but at the moment it's not a priority. http://www.ettinger.co.uk/

Headphones - this is something I do use everyday. From wired to wireless, all bases are all covered. Have a look at www.head-fi.org if you want some info.

Set of kitchen knives - depends I guess on how much you cook, but can definitely be thought of as something for everyday use.

Razor - Every few months I have the urge to get a straight razor as I know in my heart I don't want the bother of sharpening, honing etc. But might be an option for you, or even a fancy Merkur or Feather DE or similar.

    Briefcase, attaché case, travel case?

Bespoke leather shoes - one day I will get a pair of made to measure shoes, when I can afford it. Came across this company a couple years ago and they are still etched in my brain http://www.gjcleverley.co.uk/mobile/index.html they also have a few short videos on YouTube that are interesting.

    Mackintosh Jacket - Definitely a classic. http://mackintosh-uk.com/

Glasses or Sunglasses - perhaps not a lifetime of service here but I guess it depends on how they are looked after. Keep the frames and just add in new lenses as and when needed as your eyes change.

Bespoke suit - who says you can't wear it everyday? But seriously it's definitely a special and long lasting addition to your wardrobe.

and I wanted to put shoe horns on my list. My grandfather got me in the habit, and he had some really nice ones but somehow after his passing they all disappeared (which is funny because I am the only one who uses one).... but I'm ok with that and have been meaning to carve my own.

oh and scottish steve, heres the best night pic my phone can manage of my comb.

I used to have one of those. Maybe I still do.

Like that comb, an item doesn't have to expensive to last forever. My three decade old Mini Mag light is an example.

A nice sterling and leather hip flask comes to mind as an item that'll last a lifetime.

I've got plenty of razors that clearly have lasted multiple lifetimes -- my Wade and Butcher Sheffield straights have lived two lifetimes already.
