    Default Gillette Diplomat? What Year?

I have what I think is a Gillette Diplomat, but there is not a year marking on it. No case or supporting documentation. It was my Grandfather's that my dad passed down to me.

Also, any good suggestions on cleaning this thing?

    Aristocrat, not Diplomat.

Check the Wiki for cleaning instructions for gold razors.

Congrats on the razor. Your granddad had great taste in razors.

Go easy - you don't want to damage the gold plate. Scrubbing Bubbles and a toothbrush.

My own 1948 Aristocrat is such a mild shaver, or at least compared to my adjustables, very mild, that I chose it this afternoon for a speed shave, when I had shaved last evening, not this morning, and ended up rushing out of here. I was able to shave practically by feel, I was in that much of a hurry, with warm water, not really hot, and got a smooth, although not close, shave that way.

Incidentally, previously, I was not falling into any grip that felt right with as short and stubby of a handle as the Aristocrat has (this time around, this so-pretty razor that has spent decades in a drawer is being given more of a workout), but what happened, as soon as I wasn't actively thinking about it, was a fingertip hold very similar to how I hold onto much longer razors, such as various cartridge types. I didn't try any variation of the first-joint hold I use with the slim adjustables and their so-similar black cousin, which had caused me hesitation on my last test of the Aristocrat.

I just got this aristocrat today:http://www.ebay.com/itm/250997607060...#ht_500wt_1413. Made in my birth year. It looks so SWEET...going to give it a try tomorrow. Thanks for the info. I think I might get another to use. This one is almost too pretty to use daily.
