    Default Blade recommendations

I've been sampling blades for a couple of months now. I worked my way through the WCS sampler and I thought I was settled on Crystal but decided to order a few more brands before making a final decision. I used the Dorco Platinum and really liked them and was planning to do a final runoff between them and the Crystals. Today I decided to try Treet Platinums and man---turned my face into hamburger meat!. It's now 12 hours later and my face is still stinging!! Had the same result with the Feathers.

Even though I have a couple more brands to try (Wilkinson & US Personna), I think I'm going to give my face a day of rest and then alternate between the Crystal and the Dorco for a couple of weeks. BTW, I am using a 1949 Super Speed (same year I was born).

Given my preference for Crystal and Dorco Platinum, I am open to suggestions of any other blades I should try before I buy 100!

    Thanks.

I had the same experience. I didnt care for the feathers, the Sweede G's were sharper than I needed, and the Crystals and the Dorcos were just right!

Derbys work well, but I just cant do any better than the Crystals. I find them to be the perfect mix of smooth/sharp and at 13-17 cents each, I change them every 3-4 days whether they need to be changed or not.

I have some Personna blades made in Isrel in a red pack that are nice as well as the Dorko, But I like the Derby's as well. I have some Feathers but have not used them yet.

I'm leaning towards the crystals myself. Where can you buy them? I got mine in the WCS sampler as well.

These blades on eBay are also Crystals in generic packaging:

Thanks! Should have looked at WCS shaving first.

I was thinking about giving the same advice. I found Astra Superior Platinums (made in Russia!!) to be an excellent razor, sharp enough, same ballpark than Derby's , Dorco and the like but consistently smoother.
Another very good and similar blade (sharp but not too sharp, but smooth) is the Bic, made in Greece.
The only 'problem' with these Astra up to now is the unmistakable smell of Soviet lubricant (that I solve easily putting the blade under running hot water for some seconds before loading the razor). It's enough to find the little envelope in the dark but not a problem at all once in the razor.
    Razor: Fatboy, Slimboy, Tech, Knack.
Brush: Kent H8, BK4, Omega boar (small, big).
Soap: Woolfat, C&E Nomad, Proraso Green, Tabac, Cella.
    Cream: Valobra Mentolo, TOBS Sandalwood.
Aftershave: Floyd Blue, Proraso Pre-Post, Dopobarba, Crema.
Other AS: Chimique Clinique, Capucci, Cerruti 1881.
All items top to bottom in my taste- YMMV

Why does blade sharpness make such a difference if you have good technique?

I started with Merkur blades, and got your Treet shave in spades. Now I use Dorcos and have fewer nicks.

If my technique is right for the razor -- a SS blue tip -- couldn't any blade produce a nick-free shave? I guess if the blade were too dull you could never get a BBS result, but you could still be nick free, no?

P.S. Aware of blade sharpness issues, I chose a sampler pack without Merkurs and Feathers. I started DE shaving years ago, and gave it up. The nine Merkur blades remaining haunt my house somewhere to this day.
