Thread: Hoffritz Slant

  1. Default Hoffritz Slant

Got a Hoffritz Slant off fleabay this weekend... hasn't arrived yet. It looked pretty nice and very interesting so I treated myself. Anyone know anything about this razor? The one I got has a case and blade holders and it looks pretty good. I will post pics once it gets here.

I have an older merkur that came in a similar case. Mine shaves great when coupled with feathers. I dont have a modern slant to compare to, but I wouldn't imagine it would shave any differently....some of the older slants had more of a slant/torque but this one looks similar to mine which seems to be about the same setup as the modern ones.

That is the one BlueBishop! Sorry I nudged you out... I will snap better pictures when it arrives! I can't wait because it looks so unique. Although I spent WAY too much money on razors this weekend because I also won a Richwood. I might have to sell my fat boy to cover the costs. lmao.

depending on which of the two new razors I like better, I may have to end up selling the other... too much money on razors in such a short period of time.

Congrats. Hoffritz slant is a really good razor. Mine has performed really well. Smooth and irritation free. Hope yours performs as admirably.

Nice looking Hoffritz. I would think it's not that different than a Merkur 37c. I've been stuck in a slant rotation the last month or so. Merkur 37c, Merkur Vintage Slant and the Hoffritz Super Slant. All great shaves btw. I'm sure you will enjoy your's soon.

I ** believe** the heads, and possibly the necks, are zinc, with the barrels being white-silver plated brass. The handles polish up nicely with a bit of metal polish or auto scratch remover & polish cream, and a loose weave terry cloth rag. I have a Pomco- very nice shaver.

Isn't the Hoffritz the one James Bond used in the books?

That nudges the cool factor up a fair bit

Yes That was the Hoffritz open comb. I obtained one in the early 1960's, after reading of it in one of the Fleming books, from Hoffritz. Still have it and rotate it in occasionally. Came in a Nickel/Silver case. Put irt aside after awhile because I did not know enough to rinse and clean the razor and blade after each use. The then new stainless blades rusted if left wet.
Something definitely from another era. Bought a Hoffritz Slant twenty years later—it came in a plastic case. I find Mercurs of late come in cardboard boxes, and the quality is not up to par, when compared to what they once produced.

I simply cannot wait to get this thing in the mail.

Bluesbishop - if it makes you feel any better, my final bid was for $100... I real wanted this one.

Copierguy - isn't merkur and hofritz the same company? If that top razor in the picture is a Merkur, it looks identical to the Hofritz I just won.

Rob72 - I hadnt even thought of using auto polish or auto cleaning products on these things. I have a massive collecton of car care products (my truck is my first love!)... I thought about just putting some flitz on this thing when I got it.

Dovo makes Merkur products. Hoffritz was a retailer in the US that Dovo branded their products for. I have a gold plated Brumml Sausalito slant that was also made by Dovo.

Flitz & a tooth brush works, but gets kinda messy, in the fine knurling. I had some really dark spots on my Pomco, so I had to Flitz. On other razors, however, the scratch remover & polish does (subjectively) just as well, and cleans off more easily. Car specific soap seems to have some additives that don't remove the protective residue of Flitz, Remover & Polish, or plain old Polish.

I bid on this one too over the weekend but it was a bit too rich for my blood. I picked up an uncased one a bit later on for about $45. It will be my first slant - can't wait to clean it up and give it a go.
