Default What is a good badger for face lathering that isn't a lather hog?

Picked up a Duke 3 a few weeks ago, and love the brush for whipping up a great lather in a bowl but lately getting more into face lathering. Have a few Semogue boars that I am breaking in but still want to keep one decent badger on hand. The problem I have with the Duke 3 is for face lathering it is a bit on the large side, but more importantly, it's not a great face latherer in my opinion since it's a lather hog. Also, as nice as it is whipping up lather in a bowl, it doesn't give up the lather onto my face when I try to apply it, and is a bit floppy. I end up 'painting' the lather onto my face with it, which seems lie a waste for a brush like that. Have it for sale in the BST but may also put up a WTT as well for something else, and looking for suggestions. Thanks!

Thater 2-band. If you think the Duke 3 is too big, i'd go with a size 0, though you could probably go to a size 1 with a bulb shape.

Rooney 1/1, 2/1, 3/1 or Stubby 1 will all treat you really well.

Rooney 1/1 will lather hog at first until broken in. Give it a couple weeks. Get the 3/1 if you like a longer handle. Either is fine choice. I also like Thater 3-band for face lathering (size 1 is plenty big). My New Forest Two Band 24mm is pretty good too...a bit stiffer since it is a two band with excellent flow through...a bit less dense than my more expensive brushes but no problem with splaying too much on the face since it is a 2 band. Have a 2-band Rooney 2XL on the way...will report back next week.

I face lather exclusively and my lone badger remaining is a 22mm New Forest two-band. I agree with cvac's assessment above. Rooney 1/1 on it's way to me for comparison.

Agree with OtherMoe on the Thater recommendation. Size 2 in bulb is just right for the face and doesn't splay.

I'll go along with the Rooney's. They're great.

Try a Simpson's colonel. Everything a duke has to offer but it's less dense so it has better flow through.

Thater 2 band, and this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Finest-Badge...item4159f912db I find the Frank Shaving brushes an exceptional deal just get the finest not silvertip. I like them almost equally well and the Thater is $100 more!! But a disclaimer I am not a huge brush guy may ADs are elsewhere in razors and soaps.

A Simspson Wee Scott is perfect once you get used to the size.

Or a silver tip brush with a loft length of 48/50mm. Ask for a custom brush. A favorite of mine is my Shavemac 21mm/45mm fan shaped brush, standard silver tip.

simpson chubby 2 superbadger ,used it last night for face lathering (i usually bowl lather). i feel once this brush is fully broken in, its performance is unmatched. the tips are soft but not floppy or overly soft that you dont feel anything on the face (its pefect balance between soft tips and face feel of the brush) , great back bone because of the density of the brush. my overall fav. i would highly recomend.

Love Thaters but you might also consider Morris & Forndran. Great flow-through and backbone; loads soaps easily and face-lathers like a champ.

Sorry to go against popular myth, but there is no such thing as a lather hog, you just need to load the brush with a sufficient amount of product.

Bigger brushes need much more product to create lather in them than a smaller brush, up to 3x's the amount.

Sorry I don't agree with a single word of this. When I use my larger brushes I load the brush for a much shorter period of time than I do with a smaller brush but due to the surface area pick up a similar amount of soap. Last night I used my Chubby 3 with Cella where the brush pretty much covers the entire surface of the red tub of the soap. Loaded it for at most for 20 seconds and had plenty of lather left over after 3 passes. I did have to urge the lather up out of the brush as I went along with subsequent passes but I don't find that problematic at all. When I'm using cream in my scuttle I use exactly the same amount of product irrespective of which brush I use.

I have never had to urge lather out of any of the many brushes I have tested- I don't ever expect universal agreement on any topic on B&B, especially one as variable as brushes. This is simply my experience.

Well, this just confirms what Jim said (highlighted above), you're using a sufficient amount of product. For those who are having to coax lather out of the brush, they should use more.
